Anxiety can be a natural, normal response to perceived threats or stressful events
Although, issues arise when it becomes excessive, irrational, or persistent, impacting our day to day functioning and making it harder to sleep/relax, etc
Although, issues arise when it becomes excessive, irrational, or persistent, impacting our day to day functioning and making it harder to sleep/relax, etc
As a result, the easiest way to combat anxiety is to reduce excitatory (glutamate) signaling and increase inhibitory (GABA) signaling in the brain to directly and instantly reduce symptoms

It has the unique ability to inhibit nicotinic acetylcholine receptors alongside some GABAergic activity, making it a potent anxiolytic
Even in small quantities it has the ability to quiet a racing mind

I get my Mulungu bark from my good friend @Grimhood's shop (which I have no affiliation with)
I highly recommend checking it out if your interested in procuring whole herbs, or some incredible premade herbal blends/tinctures

2) Magnesium
Magnesium is one of those supplements that everyone should be taking daily
It’s involved in thousands of bodily processes, but most people are deficient
Because of that, a lot of people feel immediate anxiety relief when they start taking it

Why?
- NMDA receptor blockade
- GABA support
- Metabolism support
- & much more
For those interested, I wrote more in depth about magnesium's primary anti-anxiety role in the brain here

The most potent magnesium form for combatting anxiety is going to be acetyl-taurate. Other forms like chloride and glycinate are great for daily use
Magnesium acetyl-taurate is available commercially as the patented "Tauromag"

Theanine primarily works by antagonizing the AMPA glutamate receptor, directly reducing glutamate activity in the brain
This is best paired with magnesium for that combined AMPA & NMDA receptor antagonism (check out the post on magnesium and the NMDAR above for more on this)

Basically, they bind to GABA receptors and enhance their function, similar to Xanax (just less potent)
Magnolia bark can be used as the whole bark (as part of a tea for example) or as an herbal extract supplement

If you go for an extract, look for one with a high % of magnolol and honokiol like this one from Nootropics Depot

5) Taurine
Taurine, like theanine, is a simple amino acid that has inhibitory effects in the brain
Unlike theanine however, it is found predominantly in animal products and acts directly on GABA receptors as a means of reducing anxiety

6) Agmatine Sulfate
Agmatine is a molecule that’s naturally produced in the body from the amino acid arginine
It has a few mechanisms of action, but most notable for the purposes of anxiety are going to be those that decrease glutamate signaling

That's going to be:
- NMDA receptor antagonism
- nNOS inhibition
More specifically, both of these mechanisms are great for halting glutamatergic positive feedback loops
More on that specifically in this post

Because of this it is a highly effective anti-anxiety tool, and is highly synergistic with other compounds that enhance GABA activity at the receptor level like magnolia bark or number 8 on this list
I use this extract from ND. Its potent enough that just half a tablet is enough most of the time, especially if used in conjunction with any other GABAergic supplement

8) Apigenin
Apigenin is the primary compound in chamomile tea responsible for its calming properties
Like magnolia bark, it's anti-anxiety mechanism is positively modulating the GABAA receptor, enhancing the action of endogenous GABA

Reminders:
1. Keep in mind not to use all of these at once (hopefully obvious)
2. If using herbal extract forms of GABAergic herbs, limit their use to 1-2 times per week to avoid tolerance buildup and GABA downregulation
