First, you need to understand what backtesting is all about..

Traders use backtesting -
To determine and compare or also test different strategies and also to derive data from a startegy and it profitability rate without risking actual money.
The goal is to determine how a strategy reacts in different market cycles and also give more insight into that strategy

The major reasons you should backtest is to derive data and understand more about your Strategy.
Data like Win rate,Trade frequency,Max loosing streak and so on
Understanding the data of your Strategy will help you build confidence and also help you stay patient while trading.

How to backtest??
Possibly, you find a new startegy you learnt for someone or you watch on YouTube or any where or even on someone chart but you don't know how to backtest it..
Backtesting on an already displayed chart is not the best at all..

Backtest should be done
Should be done asif you don't know what will happen next.
Backtest should not be done when you are already seeing what you need to see.
Backtesting should be done without you having idea of how the next candle stick looks like that is why you need a BAR REPLAY TOOL.

The BAR REPLAY TOOL will give you acess to erase candle stick from a chosen price date and then watch the candle stick and price develop and print asif it is a live market.
From there you can pay attention to what ever detail you want to pay attention to like time, liquidity

Be specific when backtesting..
E.g if you don't trade asian session then you don't have to fake a trade off asian session..
You need to backtest asif you are on a live market..
While backtesting be serious with it
Only backtest what you can do on a live market.

Treat everything as if is a live market like the time you execute trade, the RRR, the entry and exit point..
Be true and sincere with yourself while backtest this will help you identify your weakness and help you work on them if needed.
