A client sent me a Dm last month complaining of Low sperm and motility count. When i check his Total sperm count it was 1.8M with motility of 30%. After treatment the sperm and motility boosted.
In this thread I'll explain the causes of low sperm count and how you can treat it.. Make sure you share for others.

9 causes of low sperm count/quality you should know
1. Infections
2. Varicocele
3. Heat & Stress
4. Drugs
5. Being too fat
6. Hormones
7. Other medical issues
8. Alcohol & smoking
9. Chemicals
Low sperm count or oligospermia means the semen a man ejaculates during an orgasm contains fewer sperm than normal. Medically, it means having less than 15 million sperm in 1ml of your semen.
If there's no sperm at all in your semen, it is called azoospermia.
Having low sperm count significantly lowers your chances of being able to impregnate a woman.
Many families have been torn apart because of the resulting infertility.
Unfortunately, in some cases, people erroneously think the cause of the infertility is the woman.
First, infections can block the production or passage of sperm due to scaring.
Infections of the
• testicles e.g. mumps orchitis
• sperm tube e g. epididymitis, &
• STI's like HIV, gonorrhea, etc
These can cause damage to the testis leading to low sperm count.
Next, varicoceles (swelling of the veins of the scrotum) is a major cause of low sperm count & infertility in men.
Sperm cells are very fragile and varicoceles create abnormal temperatures inside the testis.
This might kill some sperm or lead to reduced quality of sperm.
Also, heat can kill sperm. When testicles are overheated it can reduce sperm production.
This can happen to men who
• drive commercially
• use bicycles for a long time
• wear tight pants & sit for long
• bath hot water or use saunas often
Anything that heats up your testis
Similarly, stress, whether emotional or physical, can lower your sperm count.
Stress can adversely affect the function of the the organs in your brain (hypothalamus & pituitary glands).
These organs normally produce the hormones required to make sperm.
Drugs of abuse & some prescription medications can also cause low sperm count. For e.g.
• anabolic steroids (which people take to build muscles or increase performance)
• cocaine
• marijuana
• some BP drugs esp. alpha blockers (don't take without doctor's prescription)
Other drugs that can decrease male fertility are
• Testosterone replacement therapy
• Some anti-cancer drugs
• Certain antifungals & antibiotics
• Some ulcer drugs, and
• Others
Basically, don't take medications without due prescription!
Your weight matter. As a man, being too fat may reduce your sperm count.
Obesity, can undermine fertility in many ways, such as causing hormonal changes that can lead to reduced sperm production & low fertility.
So start by shedding those extra pounds.
Hormone imbalances. Your hypothalamus, pituitary & testicles produce hormones needed to create sperm.
Alterations in the level of these hormones, & influence from other organs such as the thyroid & adrenal gland, may impair sperm production.
Medical conditions such as
• undescended testis
• anti-sperm antibodies
• defect of the tubes that carry sperm
• genetic conditions (like Klinefelter)
• genital surgeries (e.g. vasectomy, hernia etc) &
• coeliac disease.
These can all cause low sperm count or quality.
Alcohol use can lower your testosterone levels & cause decreased sperm production. And smokers tend to have lower sperm counts than people who don't smoke.
Finally, some men can be exposed to industrial chemicals that destroy sperm.
These include benzenes, toluene, xylene, herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, some painting materials, heavy metal like lead, & exposure to radiation or X-rays.
Protect your fertility by avoiding things that lower sperm count & quality:
• Don't smoke
• Limit alcohol
• No illicit drugs
• Don't take unprescribed drugs
• Keep a healthy weight
• Avoid heat in your genitals
• Manage stress
• Avoid pesticides, heavy metals & toxins.
