🧵 What is a Triple Dip La Niña?
How does La NiƱa affect India’s climate?

How La NiƱa Affects India's Climate:
• La NiƱa, the cool phase of the El NiƱo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), typically brings normal to above-normal rainfall during the Indian monsoon season.
• This is because the cooler waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific enhance the pressure difference between the eastern and western parts of the Indian Ocean, strengthening the monsoon winds that bring moisture to India.
Influence of La NiƱa and El NiƱo on Global Atmospheric Circulation and Weather Patterns:
1ļøāƒ£ La NiƱa:
During La NiƱa, the trade winds strengthen, pushing warm surface waters westward across the Pacific. This leads to cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific and warmer-than-average temperatures in the western Pacific. These changes in sea surface temperatures affect atmospheric circulation patterns, leading to:
• Increased rainfall over Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and parts of Australia.
• Droughts in parts of Africa and South America.
• Increased hurricane activity in the Atlantic.
• Colder winters in northern parts of North America.
2ļøāƒ£ El NiƱo
During El NiƱo, the trade winds weaken or even reverse, allowing warm surface waters to spread eastward across the Pacific. This leads to warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific and cooler-than-average temperatures in the western Pacific. These changes affect atmospheric circulation, leading to:
• Reduced rainfall over Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and parts of Australia.
• Increased rainfall in parts of South America.
• Suppressed hurricane activity in the Atlantic.
• Milder winters in northern parts of North America.
• Droughts and heatwaves in India.
What is a Triple Dip La NiƱa?
A "Triple Dip" La NiƱa refers to the occurrence of La NiƱa conditions for three consecutive winters in the Northern Hemisphere (or three consecutive summers in the Southern Hemisphere).
This is a relatively rare event. x.com
Potential Impact of a La NiƱa Forming Now:
If a La NiƱa were to form now (December 2024), it could have the following impacts:
1ļøāƒ£ Current Indian Winter (2024-2025):
• A late-forming La NiƱa might not have a significant impact on the current winter, which is already underway.
• However, it could contribute to colder nights in northern India, while daytime temperatures might be higher than normal.
• The combined effect of lower temperatures and a potentially lower planetary boundary layer height could exacerbate air pollution if increased biomass burning occurs for heating, although stronger winds might partially offset this effect.
2ļøāƒ£ Subsequent Indian Summer (2025):
• A La NiƱa could lead to a milder summer in 2025, offering some relief from the extreme heat experienced during El NiƱo years.
3ļøāƒ£ Indian Monsoon (2025):
• A La NiƱa event is typically associated with normal to above-normal monsoon rainfall in India.
• If the La NiƱa persists into the monsoon season, it could enhance rainfall and potentially lead to a good monsoon.
