"Studies found that it's a 13th century forgery!" the critics of the Holy Shroud will often tell you
Yes, a study from 1988 did suggest this

But there's much more to the story👇🧵 x.com
1. The famous 1988 study was made using the carbon dating method of analysis. Threads from the Shroud were used to make the claim that it's a medieval forgery x.com
2. In 2022, a team of Italian scientists took some samples from the same spot as the previous study. However, they chose to use another method to date them: the wide-angle X-ray scattering method (known as WAXS) x.com
3. The researchers then compared the samples to samples of linen from both 1st century AD and 13th-15th centuries x.com
5. The authors of the 2022 study find the 1988 results questionable: "To make the present result compatible with that of the 1988 radiocarbon test, the Shroud of Turn should have been conserved during its hypothetical seven centuries of life at a secular room temperature very close to the maximum values registered on the earth" says the 2022 study.
6. But how do you explain the carbon dating results then? The author of the newer study has an answer ready:
"Fabric samples are usually subject to all kinds of contamination, which cannot be completely removed from the dated specimen." So, contamination caused the error. x.com
