Explaining everything you need to know about Barca’s issues with registering Dani Olmo and Pau Victor!
(A Thread)
How did we register Dani Olmo in the first place?
Dani Olmo's initial registration with Barca was facilitated by utilizing the salary space freed up due to Andreas Christensen's injury. Christensen suffered an Achilles injury in August 2024, sidelining him for months.
This registration was temporary and set to expire on December 31, 2024. We used approximately 80% of Christensen's salary to "register" Olmo for the first half of the season. Now, many are bound to ask the next question.
Why can't we just register Dani Olmo in January?
Technically, both Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor are not officially registered with Barca for the 2024/2025 season as of December 31, 2024 (as it expires). In La Liga, there are two registration windows.
However, you can't register any player who was signed in the previous summer transfer window but wasn't registered before December 31. Only signings made in January.
In other words, if Dani Olmo is not registered by December 31, he can’t be registered at all (according to standard procedures). We all know clubs find ways around obstacles though.
Why can’t we register him right now?
Our salary structure still exceeds our salary cap, which means we are trying to generate revenue to make room for Pau Victor and Dani Olmo. That’s why we sell the VIP seats for the renovated Camp Nou.
Will Dani Olmo leave for free?
He can, but he does not have to. A clause in his contract lets him leave if he can’t be registered.
What is next?
Barca have sent documents to La Liga showing their strategy with the financial lever (sale of VIP seats). The league has to review it to ensure the funds are legitimate and align with FFP criteria.
