An underrated aspect of the streaming platform wars is over content for children— Apple TV completely monopolizes the Peanuts, Disney is Disney (trash & they hide the classics & give them trigger warnings about cultural insensitivity), Netflix is brain rot you’ve never heard of, but Max has every Ghibli movie.
The effect on Gen Alpha might be akin to the console wars of yesteryear— gangs of children in elementary school are probably formed by their parental choice of primary streaming platform.
At the playground you see the Disney+ families with their Bluey brand merch, Paw Patrol is the “conservative” opposite, Paramount+ — but my daughter is of the elite— she says “Totoro lives in the Trees”
This is novel, because in the past every kid could easily turn from Disney to Paramount by changing the channel, usually only up or down one channel— but now they’re hardlocked into the subscription tree of their parents— it’s much more like “being a Nintendo family” etc
Sonic has made me think about this— as I had a Nintendo 64, & a few friends growing up had the Sega Saturn— years later, the divide became intractable, Xbox360 vs PS3 carved the male socium to the marrow
