This is an old article of mine regarding intercession that I found in my notes so I'm sharing it at the request of some brothers.
Do the dead hear the living?
According to Ibn taymiya, the dead can hear the living,
Ibn taymiya was asked whather the dead person hears his visitor. He replied: “Yes, globally” and he mentioned the following Hadith: x.com
Usually the people who deny this (like the Sunnah website itself) use the following Hadith, however, Do you not see that they have purposely stopped quoting the Qur'an & leave it outside of quotes to make it look like Aïsha (رضي الله عنها) is explaining what the verse means?
The bit underlined in blue is still the Qur'an. She’s not saying this. And we know what the verses mean from Tafsir. They are tempering with the scriptures. x.com
Here are the commentaries of Al-Tabari, And Al-Jalalayn, and samarqandi, Fairuzabadi, And Imam Tabarani (رحمه الله و رضي الله عنهم أجمعين): x.com
Anyway, what Aïsha (رضي الله عنها) could have meant, given the meaning is guidance, and given that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said" now they know very well what I used to tell them was the truth", because they were dead to it before, and now they know.
When we pray to Allah does it have more of a chance of being answered if we mention individuals who were close to Allah when they were alive?
It's not possible to confirm with absolute certainty, but Ibn Qudamah al-Hanbali (رحمه الله) encouraged this in a time of need. x.com
إن تدعوهم لا يسمعوا دعائكم ولو سمعوا ماستجابوا لكم ويوم القيامة يكفرون بشرككم ولا ينبئك مثل خبير.
