In a study from 2013, researchers tested where skilled(a) and unskilled(b) players focused their gaze during match situations when the ball was far and near.
Skilled players took in more information on the game’s reference points than their unskilled counterparts.

Skilled participants:
spent significantly more time fixating on the opponents (19.3%) and areas of free space (12.5%) when compared with the less skilled group; opponents (5.6%) and areas of free space (2.3%).
In contrast, less skilled players spent significantly more time fixating the player in possession of the ball (60.6%) and the ball’s course of action (28.1%) compared with the skilled players; player in possession (52.2%) and ball’s course of action (6.4%).
You want to help your players become proficient in anticipation and decision-making in football (intelligent footballers), give them football’s reference points (ball, space opponents, teammates) to learn from.
If you don’t train right, you might as well not train at all.
