Green tea contains four flavonoid polyphenols which are:
⁃Epicatechin (EC)
⁃Epigallocatechin (EGC)
⁃Epicatechin gallate (ECG)
⁃Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)

⁃Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)
EGCG is the most powerful antioxidant catechin within green tea.
It functions to disable unstable & highly reactive molecules called free radicals by loaning them electrons to stabilize them.

EGCG has been shown to decrease T-cell proliferation, which leads to the possibility that EGCG supplementation could assist those with autoimmune and/or inflammatory disorders to help control excessive T-cell proliferation.
EGCG has also been shown to reduce DNA methylation in cancerous cells, which opens up previously unavailable genes that can help to combat the cancer.
EGCG is also capable of inhibiting a cancer cell’s ability to turn on genes that help it grow & hijack hormone pathways.
EGCG has also been discovered to down-regulate telomerase activity in cancer cells, which leads to a shorter life cycle for the cancer cell & a quicker start to apoptosis.
It also prevents angiogenesis of tumors & blocks mutations that cancer needs to thrive.
In an experiment, mice were exposed to UV radiation to develop skin tumors. They were given green tea as the only source of drinking water, & the results showed a decrease in the number & size of tumors.
EGCG could also serve as a treatment for Alzheimers disease due to its neuroprotective qualities.
In aging rats with cognitive impairment, EGCG was able to pass through the weakened blood-brain barrier & lead to cognitive improvement & a decrease in plaque build up in the brain

Lastly, green tea has been studied to demonstrate an increase in thermogenesis and fat oxidation throughout day hours without causing an increase in heart rate.
