Stress: The silent killer your doctor never talks about
THREAD
Everyone is stressed
From early mornings to hectic work schedules
High stress is the norm for many
And the demands of life make it hard for you to relax
The truth is that 75% of doctor’s visits in America are due to stress according to the CDC
That’s serious
The worst is that many of these are preventable
But nothing is being done about it
The damages that stress causes accumulate slowly over time
Your immune system crashes
Your brain cells shrink which affects concentration and memory
And you start to age faster
By the time you realize your stress is a problem
It’s already too late
Your sleep and mental health are in the dumps
You get sick constantly
And the only solution the system has for you is medications
Your stress levels are controlled by a hormone called cortisol
Your brain perceives stress and tells your adrenal glands to it
Imagine your stress as a fire
And Cortisol as the water that helps extinguish the flames
Now
Not all stress is bad for you
Eustress is the type of stress that pushes and drives you to move forward
You need some of this in your life
The other side of the coin is Distress
The negative physical and psychological type of stress that most of you feel
Anxiety
A sense of being overwhelmed
Irritability
We call it your Fight or Flight mode
Your fight or flight mode was very important in the past
It helped your ancestors spot a predator in the distance to escape
Or gave them superhuman strength to fight it off and survive
Stress was very short-lived
Today
Stress is chronic
Your bills to pay, deadlines at work & problems at home are the new “predators”
These non-stop stressors make it hard for your mind and body to deal with them
Luckily
Your body has ways to deal with stress
It produces DHEA, a hormone that counters cortisol
Serotonin and GABA are neurotransmitters that your brain uses to help you focus and calm you down (respectively)
Constant stress depletes your reserves of these natural anti-stress tools
Once they’re empty
You fall into what is called burnout
And sometimes into even more serious mental challenges like depression or severe anxiety
In the 20th century
Hans Selye, an endocrinologist, discovered that we all go through 3 stages of stress:
Alarm
Resistance
Exhaustion(Burnout)
Each stage has its own challenges
Learn more here:
Another lesser-known side effect of chronic stress is its effect on your thyroid
Your thyroid is important for:
Brain function
Metabolism
Heart
Digestion
High cortisol shuts down its function and puts you at serious health risks
Now
You might be wondering: “ How the hell can I better manage my stress?”
There are quite a few things to do
But for simplicity’s sake
I’ll give you the most powerful ones here
1) Eat an Ancestral diet
Processed foods & refined sugars feed into your stress
They throw your blood sugar off balance which spikes your insulin
High insulin = high cortisol/stress
Not sure what to eat? Check here:
2) Fix your light environment
Your body produces serotonin from sun exposure
You need to spend more time outside
And less in front of screens poisoning you with blue light
The best times are early morning and sunset
Not getting enough sun also means you don’t produce enough melatonin
Melatonin is your sleep hormone and also your body’s most potent antioxidant
This brings me to my next point…
3) Prioritize quality sleep
The sweet spot for most people is 8-9 hours
When you’re not sleeping right
Your brain struggles to work at its best
Your mood takes a hit and you feel on edge all-day
Hello stress fiesta
4) Exercise more
Being stationary most of your day means built-up energy
You need an outlet to let go of it
Or it’ll just cycle through your mind and stress you out
You don’t have to complicate things
Go for walk
Lift weights
Play sport
Just do something
5) Take supplements and herbs
There are certain natural remedies and nutrients that can help you manage stress
They lower cortisol, boost serotonin and GABA
All of which can help you feel better
Here are some of my favorites stress herbs/supplements:
Magnesium glycinate
Licorice Root extract
Phosphatidylserine
Bacopa Monnieri
Black seed oil
Ashwagandha
L-Theanine
Holy Basil
Taurine
Inositol
