If a doctor says “you can’t have ADHD because ______,” run like hell to seek a second opinion.
“You can’t have ADHD because you’re too smart.”
Wrong. ADHD does not affect intelligence. This ableist language paints people with ADHD as incapable of being smart—simply untrue.
“You can’t have ADHD because you had good grades in school.”
Wrong. Grades are not a great measurement anyway, and many cope with their ADHD through perfectionism (which tears them apart inside) resulting in high stress but good grades.
“You can’t have ADHD because you have a steady job.”
Wrong. Some ADHDers find a career that matches their interest, motivation, or passion. Others can keep jobs out of fear or masking.
“You can’t have ADHD because you have your own business.”
Wrong. People with ADHD are actually more likely than others to become an entrepreneur, because they can shape their work and schedule around the way their unique brain works.
“You can’t have ADHD because it’s just anxiety or depression.”
Wrong. ADHD is highly comorbid, meaning people with ADHD often (more than 50% of the time) have additional disorders including anxiety and depression (and autism, and OCD, and dyslexia, and BPD, etc).
