TWIN PEAKS x WIZARD OF OZ, #6.1
The upside-down horseshoe necklace of Carrie Page (the Odessa version of Laura Palmer) in Part 18

The upside-down horseshoe tie tack of Prof. Marvel (the Kansas version of The Wizard)
[I’m not aware of anyone pointing out this echo previously]
It’s worth noting here two other conspicuous, well-known OZ echoes in TP-2017’s two-part finale:
First, in Part 17 there are two instances where a shift is made between filming in color & filming in black white. The only difference is that TP begins in color; OZ begins B&W.
(After Part 17’s second color-shift, the next line spokenβ€”β€œWe’re going home”—even thematically parallels the lines spoken during OZ’s second color shiftβ€”β€œThere’s no place like home.”)
Second, the final moment of TP-2017β€”Carrie/Laura appearing to β€œwake” to her past memories after a β€œLaura!” wake-up call from her motherβ€”parallels the beginning of OZ’s final sequence β€”Dorothy β€œwaking” from her OZ β€œdream” after her mother-figure says β€œwake up, honey.”
Additional parallels between OZ & TP’s two-part finale will be addressed in the next thread post in this series, #6.2.
On the horseshoe figure, note that in OZ it appears not only upside-down on Prof. Marvel’s tie tack, but also right-side-up on the Gale family barn:
The upside-down version worn by Prof. Marvel & Carrie Page, in addition to arguably evoking the arch of a rainbow, has numerous other potential connotations.
As an emblem of smithery, it can be seen to have alchemical connotations, as well as indicate hopes for β€œgood luck.”
It also resembles an Omega, a symbol of the β€œGreat End” (which also has religious connotations), as well as a symbol used to represent ohm, the unit of electrical resistance.
(There are also some who claim Cooper wears an Omega De Ville watch for at least part of S1-S2.)
There are other potential connotations of the figure (e.g., it arguably resembles a sideways C, as in, Mr. C), including an interesting one that may even reference another filmβ€”but that’s beyond the scope of this thread.
Lastly I’ll note that this is at least the second time we have a version of TWIN PEAKS’ Laura mirroring OZ’s Wizard (or a version of him).
