Sue was 64, frail, in-pain, and nervous to be in the gym.
I didn’t use db’s or bb’s. Instead, our personal training mimicked real life scenarios.
Despite what IG will lead you to believe, for many of our clients, fitness goes beyond the physique.
Here's Sue's story . . .
Sue was a child psychologist. She traveled to schools.
She carried a bag of games to assess children.
Many of the games were bulky. Her bag was heavy and awkward. The parking lots were big.
Lifting and moving this bag caused her pain.
So, I had her bring the bag into the gym.
First, I assessed Sue and got medical clearance.
Then, I had her describe her daily journey.
There were 3 movements we had to improve and strengthen:
1. Lifting the bag out of the trunk.
2. Getting the bag into a carry position.
3. Walking with the bag.
The bag weighed ~30lbs.
Lifting a bag out of a car is a deadlift variation. The item starts around hip height and requires a forward bend.
Fortunately, you can generate leverage by pressing your knees into the trunk.
So, using step boxes, that's what we practiced.
Next, instead of swinging the bag into a side carry position, I told Sue to first drop the bag onto the ground.
With the bag out of the trunk and on the ground, I told her to walk to the side of it and pick it up with good form.
We practiced suitcase deadlifts with the bag.
Finally, she had to carry the thing through the parking lot.
This meant stepping over stuff, maneuvering around stuff, and walking.
So, I set up an obstacle course in the gym and we worked on suitcase walks.
For many of our clients, the gym's a place to build tolerance to real life physical challenges.
Mimicking real world scenarios in a safe and controlled manner with progressive overload and proper technique can be life-changing.
