โ€œGo get changed.โ€
It was 4:37pm, Todd was late. Todd was always late for his workouts.
He smiled and handed me a book saying,
โ€œYouโ€™re not going to be my personal trainer much longer.โ€
He was right.
And that day he sent me down the path to making millions of dollars.
"Is this what my life is going to be like?"
I loved training clients, but the long days were tough.
6am starts. 9:45pm finishes. Naps on mats in the break room. That kind of shit.
As a young guy, it was great. But one day I desired a family, and to travel.
Todd sensed that.
The hidden secret of personal training is that our clients are our greatest teachers.
Nowhere else can a 22 year old can get paid to be mentored by the most successful people in their community.
Itโ€™s priceless.
Took me a while to learn this though . . .
Todd had 3 kids and was the chief of psychiatry at one of the biggest hospitals in Toronto.
And 22-year old idiot me held him in contempt because he was always 7 minutes late for his 4:30pm workout twice a week.
Now I realize just how much he had his shit together.
The book Todd handed me was Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.
"I wish somebody gave me this when I was your age." Todd said. "And I won't be upset if you stop training me as a result."
Todd believed in me. He was in my corner.
The book was good.
But it wasn't the book that made the difference.
It was Todd. He was the spark that I needed.
We're still in touch, 13 years later. He's not a client anymore but heโ€™s still a friend and mentor.
And this is why personal training is the best job in the world.
