1 year ago I started this twitter account.
48,000+ followers later, here's everything I've learned so far:
Before diving in - many of the points below relate to audience building.
Not everyone on twitter is actively interested in doing that, which is totally fine.
For me, this tweet from @amandanat sums up why I wanted to build a following:
@amandanat 1. Picking a Niche
The niche you choose plays a big factor in your success. The noisier the niche, the harder it is to stand out.
I chose franchises bc of my experience in the industry, and this tweet from @austin_rief.
@amandanat @austin_rief 2. Setting Up Your Profile
Your bio should state what you'll tweet about + any social proofs.
@mrsharma is a great example - he's ubiquitous within the DTC world and it's clear from his bio this was his goal.
A good bio will convert profile views into follows!
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma 3. Being Anon
I chose to go anon so people would judge me solely for what I tweet, not my gender, age, race, etc.
I've found it also accelerates follower growth if you get the branding of the anonymous identity right.
@MrSollozzo is doing a great job of this too
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo 4. Day 1: Start Building Creativity!
I made it a point at the start to tweet at least 2x every single day.
Having never tweeted consistently before, my goal was to build my creative muscle more than anything else.
It took time, but it does work and gets easier with practice!
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo 5. Avoid Common Mistakes
β€’ Don't include links in the first tweet
β€’ Never start a thread by tweeting "@" another user
Doing either severely limits your engagement potential.
Also, when drafting a thread, do so in a tool like @typefully so you don't lose your hard work!
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully 6. Zero - 1,000 Followers
I grew to 1k followers mainly by adding value in the comments of larger accounts.
I only did so when it was relevant, & for me this meant following people in the small-business twitter world.
Note: "value" can be any form of educational, funny, etc.
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully 7. Threads Work
Choosing the topic is as important as the writing - if it isn't interesting, useful, or funny, it won't pop.
My formula:
β€’ Pick a well known topic
β€’ Find a little known story within the topic
β€’ Find a wild journey within the little known story
Example πŸ‘‡
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully My recent thread about Burger King:
β€’ Well known topic (Burger King)
β€’ Little known story (It's called Hungry Jacks in Australia)
β€’ Wild journey within the story (David vs Goliath style legal battle)
It hit each criteria, & brought in 5k followers
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully 8. Quality over Quantity
Once my creative muscle was built, I focused less on quantity output and more on quality.
I tried writing threads 3x/week at 1 point, but they were garbage quality.
I've strived for 1 solid thread a week since February, and the results have been great.
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully 9. Create Great Product, Hustle for Distribution
I got this from @SahilBloom's audience building course.
You can't rely solely on your tweets to do all the work.
Engage with people consistently in similar niches, help build others up, and they'll start doing the same for you.
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom 10. It's More Fun When You're Winning
I'm not going to lie - twitter can be really frustrating and demoralizing when you feel like you're going nowhere.
But don't confuse that frustration with "this niche isn't my passion".
Here' why πŸ‘‡
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom 11. Growth Isn't Linear!
It took me 8.5 months to get to 4,500 followers (March of this year).
Since then, I've added 44,000 followers! Keep showing up.
h/t @jackbutcher for the powerful image
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher 12. Threads for Scale, Tweets for Affinity
Generally - I use threads to appeal to as many people as possible while still being "on brand".
My tweets are then targeted for people interested in small business ownership via franchises.
Cast a wide net, then build your community
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher 13. Focus on Inputs
Around New Year's, many people tweeted follower growth goals for 2022.
But a goal of producing "X quality threads/tweets/etc. per week" is way more impactful.
As said earlier, growth is unpredictable, so focus on the inputs & the results will follow.
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher 14. Develop a System
It's really hard to consistently create content without a system.
I use notion for my ideas, and Typefully to draft threads.
Highly recommend both - here's a screenshot of my friend @barrettjoneill's elite notion dashboard that he posted last week!
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher @barrettjoneill 15. Ignore Negativity
As your followers grow you're bound to get trolls.
I try to keep the vibes positive so I just ignore the negative users.
Reminder: don't confuse pushback/disagreement as "negativity" - (respectful) open discourse and learning is part of the fun!
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher @barrettjoneill 16. How to Engage
Try to answer every reply and DM - engage with those who are replying to you!
Admittedly, it's getting harder to keep up as I grow, so at some point I'll likely start following this engagement structure from @thejustinwelsh.
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher @barrettjoneill @thejustinwelsh 17. Creativity is (seemingly) Endless
When I started this account, I was worried that 1 day I'd simply run out of things to say.
The reality is there's always a new angle to take, relevant news to break down, etc.
The ideas are endless once you're in a rhythm.
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher @barrettjoneill @thejustinwelsh 18. Lastly - HAVE FUN
As @packyM said in The Great Online Game:
"The goal isn’t perfection, it’s experimentation. Play around, try new things; some will hit, some won’t. That’s part of the fun. It’ll keep you hungry."
He's right. 1 year in, and I'm hungrier than ever.
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher @barrettjoneill @thejustinwelsh @packyM If you're in the early days of trying to build a following, I hope this helped!
This is just what's worked for me - I'm sure there are different approaches that work just as well.
Feel free to give me a follow @franchisewolf if you're interested in any franchise content.
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher @barrettjoneill @thejustinwelsh @packyM TLDR:
β€’ Pick a niche
β€’ Make your bio
β€’ Build the muscle
β€’ Avoid common mistakes
β€’ Comments to get 1k followers
β€’ Threads work + my formula
β€’ Quality over quantity
β€’ Create great product, hustle for distribution
β€’ It's more fun when you're winning
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher @barrettjoneill @thejustinwelsh @packyM TLDR continued:
β€’ Growth isn't linear
β€’ Threads for scale, tweets for affinity
β€’ Focus on inputs
β€’ Develop a system
β€’ Ignore Negativity
β€’ The engagement matrix
β€’ Creativity is endless
β€’ Have fun!
@amandanat @austin_rief @mrsharma @MrSollozzo @typefully @SahilBloom @jackbutcher @barrettjoneill @thejustinwelsh @packyM P.S.
Shout-out to my man @taylor_smb for being a day 1 believer!
