ZINC
The trace mineral you never knew you needed.
//THREAD//
Zinc is a compound found in almost all things naturally occuring on this earth.
Itโ€™s in rock, soil, air, water, plants, animals and humans.
This thread looks at what zinc does in your body, why you need it and where you can get it.
Let's learn more๐Ÿ‘‡
Zinc is an essential trace mineral, meaning that we only need small amounts (11 mg for men, 9 mg for women) per day.
However, this doesnโ€™t mean itโ€™s not important.
In fact, zinc is super important for a number of processes in the human body.
It has anti-oxidative stress and anti-inflammatory functions and can reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and protect against heart attacks.

In a world filled with inflammatory foods (hello seed oils) and heart disease being the #1 cause of death worldwide, antioxidants (like vitamin A, E, C, zinc and selenium) are crucial for staying healthy.
Furthermore, zinc imbalances increase your risk of infections such as the jabaroo ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’‰
This is because your immune system heavily depends on the mineral for immune cell activation.
People with cojona showed lower average zinc levels and experienced worse symptoms.
Pretty strange we didnโ€™t hear Big Pharma about this right?โ€ฆ Itโ€™s almost as if they care more about selling their product than about your health.
Anyway, back to the thread.
Aside from boosting your immune system, zinc plays a role in hair, nail and tooth health, nerve cell messaging, normal cell functioning and having good night vision.
It also severely affects your reproductive health.
To elaborate: if you have low zinc in your blood, your testosterone (or oestrogen/progesterone) will be low as well.
This is known as hypogonadism and is not good if you want to have babies or be healthy in general.
Bringing back zinc to normal levels will raise your testosterone, which will raise your sex drive.
This is why some people say oysters (super high in zinc) are a natural aphrodisiac.
By the way, Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, was born in the sea. Coincidence?
For men, eating more zinc can lead to more sperm volume as well as stronger sperm cells.
Zinc is also required for DNA synthesis so obviously your sperm will benefit from having optimal levels of the mineral in your blood.
Poor DNA synthesis = poor sperm quality.
Given our infertility crisis, restoring sperm counts and sperm quality by increasing male testosterone levels (through more dietary zinc) can seriously help men reclaim their sexual health.
Deficiency in zinc mostly occurs from insufficient dietary intake, or from malabsorption in the gut.
Symptoms are hair loss, white spots on fingernails, diarrhoea, poor memory, brain fog, eczema and frequent illness.
Malabsorption may be due to the phytic acid, an antinutrient found in cereals, corn, rice, grains and seeds.
Phytic acid binds to zinc (as well as to magnesium, iron and calcium) and stops them from being absorbed in the gut.
This hurts the bioavailability of the trace mineral.
Soaking, cooking, germinating and fermenting are good ways to remove antinutrients, but these also slightly reduce the nutrient quantity in the foods.
So, donโ€™t just rely on only using these techniques and also include more bioavailable zinc sources in your diet.
The best sources of zinc are:
โ€“ oysters (by far)
โ€“ red meat
โ€“ dark chocolate
โ€“ Emmentaler cheese
โ€“ pumpkin, hemp seeds
โ€“ pork liver
Make sure you have these in your diet for optimal zinc intake.
Be careful you donโ€™t overdose though, because this may cause copper deficiency or anaemia, which will in turn lead to other health issues and complications.
Letโ€™s recap:
โœ…Zinc is an essential trace mineral.
โœ…It is important for immune health, hormonal health, and nerve cell messaging.
โœ…Deficiency: lower fertility, poor sperm, hair loss, prone to infection.
โœ… Oysters are your best friend for zinc.
