12 ways Big Agriculture and Big Food are wrecking your gut health, ruining your sleep and making you bald
THREAD
Nutrient deficiencies are more common than you think
Not only have we replaced whole foods with processed garbage that drains you of precious vitamins & minerals
But the soil upon which crops are grown is also depleted
Pesticide use & unsustainable mono-crop agriculture are to blame
These kill soil microbiome diversity
Without it, the transfer of nutrients from the ground into your food isn’t optimal
Crops are genetically modified to grow large & ward off pests
They look perfect & tasty on the outside
But end up being tasteless & devoid of much of its nutrition
Your food’s nutrient density has dropped
It's estimated that nutrients in your food are down over 38% since the 1950s
You might be eating all the good stuff
But it often isn't enough to keep you thriving
Our gut health is also destroyed due to high consumption of these frankenfoods
Your gallbladder & liver are overworked which makes it harder to digest & absorb what you eat (aka malabsorption)
It’s a recipe for many future health disasters
With that being said
Properly nourishing yourself these days takes effort
Your body gives you physical signs when something’s off
But they often go unnoticed
Let’s dive deeper into what you should look out for
1- Red bumps on skin
Also known as keratosis pillaris
This skin condition happens because your body struggles to produce collagen
Your collagen needs magnesium, vitamin C & vitamin A to be at its best
Copper also helps the proteins of your skin collagen keep their structure
Healthy structure = healthy skin
Inflammation plays a role in these bumps
If you’re eating processed foods
then you probably have a lot of omega 6
So you need more omega-3s in your diet
Foods to eat to correct your deficiencies: cod and beef liver, salmon, sardines/mackerel/anchovies, bone broth
2- Craving salty foods
You’ve probably met someone who craves salty food
It’s fairly common these days
We’re all told to avoid salt like the plague
And that’s why your body ends up demanding it at some point
Salty food cravings are a sign of sodium deficiency
Some evidence shows it can be because of low zinc levels which cause you to lose your sense of taste
Foods to eat: add unrefined sea salt to all your meals, oysters, beef liver, game meats
3- Overthinking/Irritability
An overactive mind & unbalanced mood is a sign your body needs support
High stress and not eating right will throw your brain out of whack
It doesn’t have to be your destiny
Mood challenges and overthinking might mean you lack B vitamins
Particularly Thiamine which will help chill you out
Foods to eat: Nutritional yeast, Game meats, seafood, raw milk
Supplementing with methylated B complex or inositol works great too
4- Nightmares
You should be dreaming every night
Not having any means your sleep isn’t as deep as it should be
Nightmares on the other hand are a sign your stress is out of control
Nightmares happen when a part of your brain called the amygdala is hyperstimulated
This is because your magnesium and B vitamin levels are low, especially thiamine (B1) and pyridoxine (B6)
You need to start eating in a way to help boost these vital b vitamins
and short circuit your stress response
Foods to eat: Nutritional yeast, salmon, Beef liver, all kinds of meats
Supplement benfotiamine or a methylated b complex
5- White spots/ridges on the nail
Your nails say a lot about you
Due to a diet high in refined carbs and low in nutrient-dense foods
Many of you end up depleting your zinc & B vitamin reserves
Low zinc = White spots
Low B vitamins/Vitamin A = Vertical ridges
Biotin is believed to play an essential role in keeping your nails at their best
Foods to eat: More meat, beef liver, oysters (zinc), nutritional yeast
6- Muscle cramps
Muscle contractions rely on mineral balance
With all the fear-mongering going on with salt
Many of you steer away from an essential element in your diet
Salts (also known as electrolytes) contain minerals such as:
Magnesium
Potassium
Sodium
All of them work in a fine balance to keep your every cell in your body healthy
Even the ones in your muscles
Muscle cramps are a sign your minerals are off
Probably Magnesium since we burn through so much of it
Could be Sodium/potassium too
Foods to eat: Coconut/spring water, Leafy greens, Sea salt, Pickle juice
Quality electrolyte supplements should have all 3 with no added sugars
7- Asthma
Breathing problems is an SOS something is off
Not being able to adequately intake oxygen puts stress on your brain
This is caused by the inflammation in your lungs triggered by your immune system
Asthma is an allergic reaction that happens in your lungs
Your immune system is accidentally attacking you
One of the best ways to boost immunity is making sure you have optimal Vitamin D levels
Spend more time outside to get Vitamin D
The sun (within reason) is your friend
Low Vitamin C can also make allergies worse
But you gotta heal the gut to rebalance your immune system
Using cortisone inhalers constantly to manage your asthma will only get you so far
Foods to eat: Citrus fruits, Bone broth, fermented foods
NAC, Quercetin and Bromelain can help relieve asthma symptoms
8 - Hair loss
80% of men and 50% of women will experience hair loss at one point in their lives
Genetics gets all of the blame
But this doesn’t mean your lifestyle isn’t playing a role
Chronic high stress (cortisol) & unbalanced hormones (estrogen) are a nightmare for hair loss
Research shows that low/dysregulated iron is definitely present
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
Low Zinc, Vitamin B3 and B7 (biotin) are also key factors in hair loss
Eating right and better managing stress/hormone levels are therefore essential
Foods to eat: Meat, Fish, Liver, Oysters
Strongly consider Red light therapy too
9- Swollen feet
Much more common as you get older
Swollen feet are a sign your electrolytes are off
This is due to a shitty Western diet and nutrient deficiencies caused by daily medication use
Refined sugars are messing you up
They drain your body of potassium & magnesium while forcing you to retain sodium
This leads to edema/swelling in your feet
You need to fix your diet and balance out your minerals
Foods to eat: Coconut water, sea salt, goat kefir, Organ meats
Supple magnesium glycinate or use mag chloride topically
An electrolyte supplement with sodium, potassium and magnesium is worth a shot
10 - Night blindness
A lot of you struggle to see well at night
And this is often due to a Vitamin A deficiency
The standard western diet is often devoid of this essential nutrient
The best source of Vitamin A (retinol) comes from animals
You can get beta carotene from plants (i.e carrots)
But then your body has to convert it into retinol
Which isn’t efficient
Eating vitamin A rich foods will keep your eyesight razor-sharp
Foods to eat: Organ meat (liver especially), egg yolks, oily fish (Cod)
If you want to supplement, you can take desiccated liver or Cod liver oil
11- Oily + Flaky skin
What’s happening on your skin is a representation of what’s going on inside you
We spend a lot of time lathering our skin with toxic synthetic chemicals
Without ever considering that diet plays a role in all of this
Oily skin is the result of overactive sebaceous glands
These oil-producing factories are controlled by two main factors:
Androgens (testosterone)
Insulin
Zinc is a primary mineral to modulates both of these
Low zinc = lots of oil
Flaky skin is a little different in that it’s more localized on the nose & forehead
We see this in people who tend to eat lots of processed foods
This increases their Omega 6 (inflammation) levels
More inflammation = less healthy skin
If you want to fix your skin, then start with your diet
Foods to eat: Cod liver, fatty fish, oysters (zinc), Grassfed beef
High dose fish oil as a supplement isn’t a bad idea either
12- Erectile dysfunction
40% of men by the age of 40 will experience Erectile dysfunction
Libido takes quite a hit in many people’s lives, particularly men
High stress, bad sleep and terrible diets are often to blame
Erectile dysfunction can happen due to a few factors
Arousal can only happen when your body is in a relaxed state
But many men get stuck in a fight or flight mode
This is often due to:
Low Gaba (relaxation)
Low Testosterone/High Estrogen
Low Zinc can dramatically affect your testosterone levels
High anxiety is a sign your GABA needs some support too
Estrogens can accumulate when your liver is detoxing properly
All of which kill your sex drive
You need to start eating better
Especially if you want to be a king in bed
Foods to eat: Fermented foods, oysters, game meats, cruciferous vegetables
Supplement with L-Theanine, magnesium glycinate and inositol
DIM and Calcium D Glucarate can help flush estrogens
