Before we start, I'm not here to talk about spinach.
I'm here to talk about oxalic acid, also known as oxalates. Spinach just happens to have a lot of them.
Oxalates are bad for your health.
This thread covers why👇

Oxalates are bad for your health.
This thread covers why👇
Aside from spinach, oxalic acid is found in high amounts in the leaves of vegetables like spinach, rhubarb, tea, red beetroot, parsley, almonds and cacao.
Especially the mouth and lining of the digestive tract are two very sensitive areas, which suffer extra from the needle-like shape, as well as from oxalic acid’s corrosive nature.
Leaky gut syndrome and other gut issues are not uncommon when you eat too many oxalate rich foods.

Other damage done by oxalates is the lower absorption of important minerals.
Some foods may be high in minerals but your body won't be able to absorb and use them properly because of the oxalates.
Some foods may be high in minerals but your body won't be able to absorb and use them properly because of the oxalates.
Spinach, for example, is a high calcium food (93-111 mg/100 gr), but due to its high oxalate content (779 mg/100 gr) the calcium availability is almost 0.
Its iron and calcium absorption rate are 2-5% and 5% respectively.
(red meat has 20%)

Deficiency in iron causes worse oxygen transport through your bloodstream and muscles.
This will make you feel tired and weak.
Severe deficiency can also lead to nerve damage, delayed development in babies and children and chronic heart failure.

Now don’t worry though, it's not that deep and eating the occasional vegetable certainly won’t do you no harm.
Especially if you’re eating with the seasons and consuming enough dairy (calcium) and red meat.

Oxalates/oxalic acid recap:
✅forms (pointy) crystals in the body
✅damages tissue and build up to kidney stones
✅binds to minerals (less bioavailable)
✅harmless when occasionally consumed as part of normal healthy diet
