Unnecessary controversy about query on caste/religion in Army enrollment forms. Caste info is sought because of recruitment on caste/religion/region lines. Religion info is required for last rites in case of death on duty, personal law- e.g succession etc. Always existed, See +
+ Form IAFK 1162/1165 (If I remember correctly). That said, ideally these things must not matter in life, but because of peculiar historical recruitment policies in the Army (and also reservation in civil employment), caste information is recorded for eligibility purposes.
