Alternative to Antony - Michael Olise to Manchester United
Michael Olise plays on the right wing in Patrick Vieira's 4-2-3-1 / 4-3-3. Olise likes to hold the width when Palace are in possession before receiving the ball and driving at the fullback choosing to either cut inside onto his favoured left foot, or dribble to the byline.
What Would Erik ten Hag & Manchester United Look for in a Right Winger? - Ball Progression
- Ball Retention
- Chance Creation
- Direct Dribbler
- Goal Threat
- Linkup with Teammates
- Pressing
- Defensively Competent
Ball Progression Olise is phenomenal at progressing the ball in wide areas, the graph below compares his progression to PL attackers. He is equally comfortable at breaking opposition lines with a pass as he is taking on defenders and carrying the ball upfield.
Ball Retention Considering his age Olise is pretty impressive in possession, ranking above average compared to PL attackers in terms of passes attempted/90 and less than average miscontrols/90. His dispossessions/90 and pass accuracy are fairly average but will improve with age.
Chance Creation Olise is a very strong creator in terms of his expected assists per 90, but his shot creating actions per 90 are only slightly above average. This suggests that Olise creates fewer chances than some attackers, but the ones which he creates are very high quality..
His main strength for chance creation is his crossing ability, constantly either shifting the ball onto his left foot for a whipped inswinging cross, or taking the ball to the byline for either a cutback or a driven cross to attackers with his right foot.
Direct Dribbler There are a couple of key aspects of Olise's game which makes him a phenomenal dribbler. His pace is obviously a major asset allowing him to accelerate away from defenders. Olise also possesses unreal close control and technical ability on the ball allowing him..
to shift the ball quickly and out of tight situations. However, his biggest strength in my opinion is his two-footedness which allows him to consistently beat opponents as he is equally as dangerous with his right foot as he is with his left.
Goal Threat An area where Olise can definitely improve is his goalscoring, he takes a very low amount of shots/90 and therefore has a very low value of expected goals. His goal tally of 2 in the Premier League last season will undoubtably be improved on with age and maturity.
Linkup with Teammates Olise relies on midfield runners to supply him with options in possession. Last season he created a strong partnership with Gallagher, who would often make advanced runs ahead of him allowing them to combine, something that could be replicated at United.
Pressing Olise is a strong presser, ranking above average for both pressures and successful pressures per 90 among PL attackers. As seen below, most of his pressures are in the defensive third, meaning that he will track advancing opposition fullbacks, a weakness at United.
Defensive Ability Olise is extremely good defensively, tracking back and winning the ball often for his team, showing that he understands the role of a winger both offensively and defensively. This work rate is an extremely good fit in a ten Hag system which demands the ball.
Market Value It is widely reported that Olise has a release clause of £35M in his current contract at Crystal Palace, however reports in the last few days have surfaced that Olise is close to agreeing a new deal which would see the clause rise to £50M.
Injury History Since bursting onto the scene at Reading, Olise has barely missed a game through injury. This is more than ideal for a United attack lacking depth, who require a player who will be available for the whole season.
Summary In my opinion, I think Michael Olise is a far better value for money signing than most options. A technical winger who creates for himself and others would suit Erik ten Hag's system perfectly. If interested, United should act fast before another big club moves in.
