9 mental models you should apply immediately to 10x your business:
1. Negotiation is Listening
In active listening, you:
• Stay quiet
• Fully concentrate
• Understand & retain info
• Then respond
In a negotiation:
• Staying quiet gives you the upper-hand
• Your response will be wiser
• Concentration/comprehension removes your emotions
2. Beachhead Strategy
A military technique – when a temporary defense line is built until backup arrives.
Every startup business should be considered a beachhead.
It's important to hold that initial line, even if you're under fire.
3. Possible vs Likely
"Because something is possible, that means it's likely."
Obviously, that's not logically true.
Yet we still slip into believing it.
"Possible" does not equal "likely."
Take risks accordingly.
4. First Principles
Scientists question an assumption over, and over, and over...
Until it's at its most basic form and can't be questioned further.
This is also a good business practice.
Never assume. Always question.
It ignites creativity and opportunity.
5. Sustainable Competitive Advantage
Competitive advantage = what you do better than anyone else
Sustainable = you can keep doing it longer than anyone else
Sustainability is half of this concept many businesses fail at.
6. Compromise Effect
People are more likely to choose a middle option than an extreme.
Example:
A product with pricing tiers of $10 & $30
will be way less successful than...
A product with pricing tiers of $5, $15, and $30
7. "Winning Hearts and Minds"
This concept is usually used to sway public opinion for a war or other crisis.
But it's also true.
These two appeals convert people more than anything else:
• Emotional
• Intellectual
8. Hunting "Whales vs Flies"
There are 3 leads/prospects you can "hunt":
• Flies - small $
• Deer - medium $$
• Whales - large $$$
Ask yourself, How can I hunt:
• 10,000,000 flies?
• 100,000 deer?
• 1,000 whales?
Making these your goals instead is the clearest path to a successful business.
9. Surface Area of Luck
If: Area = Length x Width,
Then: Luck Area = Doing x Telling
Doing is your passion for action.
Telling is sharing that passion with others.
The greater your area of luck, the more space opportunities have to land.
