the reason we see so few "real" strategies
is that the bottleneck is not strategy (or even strategic acumen)
it is strategy deployment.
bc strategy deployment is hard, painful, and political (and requires autonomy), people optimize to lower the pain (no strategy)
...the counterintuitive lesson here is that if you want real strategy ... you need to solve the problem of strategy deployment, aligned autonomy, org structure, budgeting, and the godawful bugaboo "process" ...
only then will you have enough air for strategy
... we think the problem is "no strategy"
when in fact the problem is "given a strategy, we don't know how to make it real...so lets not worry about the strategy for now"
