10 Random Secrets for Personal Trainers from 17 years working in fitness.
1. Manipulating grips is key
Client’s need to repeat exercises in order to improve. But they get bored. So, change the grip.
Also, changing the grip can help fix grip strength issues, prevent injury, and optimize different parts of the muscle.
2. Teach client’s workout jargon
Client's show up more if they feel like they belong.
I love over-hearing them talk about their rep ranges.
One time I even heard my client remark that all exercises with names of former Soviet Union countries are vicious hahaha.
3. Unload barbells without breaking your back.
Step 1: Remove clips.
Step 2: Remove all weights from one side.
Step 3: Tip the bar, dumping the weights off of the other end.
Step 4: Wipe the dust off of your shoulder.
4. Ask good questions. Shut up. And let the client talk.
Use open-ended questions:
“How did they feel?”
“Can you tell me more?”
When you think the client’s finished speaking, count to two in your head before responding.
Allow them time to get to the root of their problem.
5. Introduce your clients to everybody
In the gym, build your client’s community.
Introduce them to others:
"Hey Sara. This is Mike. He also vacations in Mexico."
They'll show up more and invite others to the gym if they're popular. Your business will grow as a result.
6. Drink super shakes
Step 1: Pick a veggie
Step 2: Pick a healthy fat (coconut or almonds for me)
Step 3: Pick a protein source
Step 4: Pick a topper (coconut shards / cinnamon)
Step 5: Add a liquid
Step 6: Blend

9. Deadlift
Strengthen your back. You’ll be spotting clients all day.
10. Change your socks often.
Because fresh socks feel like the first day of Spring and I like Spring.
Bonus: A personal manifesto keeps you in check.
Here’s mine:
"Do great work and ignore shitty people. Have an intangible element for everything you sell. Create better free content than anybody else. When you sell, make sure that it’s fucking awesome and sell hard”
