7 reasons why you need exercise (and they're not the ones you're thinking of):
When you think of exercise, you rarely consider the:
- Mental health
- Psychological
- Emotional
benefits that come from being active.
1. Improved brain function
Exercise helps your brain:
- Builds more brain cells
- Prevent disease (Alzheimer's)
- Slow cognitive decline (dementia)
And improves your:
- Memory
- Creativity
- Circulation
- Mental health
- Concentration
- Learning ability
How exercise improves your brain function:
Exercise improves blood flow to the brain → starts the growth of new blood vessels and brain cells.
BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) causes the growth of new neurons and repairs/protects brain cells from degeneration.
2. Increased happiness
Exercise (from walking to weight lifting) improves mood and relieves symptoms of depression.
Studies show that among people with depression, exercise can increase the chance of remission by 22%.
Exercise triggers the release of chemicals in the brain:
- Serotonin
- Dopamine
- Endorphins
- Norepinephrine
Endorphins → cause feelings of happiness.
3. Increased lifespan
Studies show that exercise can increase your life span by 5 years.
Who doesn't want to live longer?
How exercise increases life span:
Exercise slows down the aging of cells.
As you age, telomeres → the protective caps on the end of chromosomes get shorter.
Research shows that exercise increases the levels of a molecule that protects telomeres.
4. Improve recovery from illness
Exercise (high & low intensity) benefits people with chronic health conditions, like:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease
- Dementia
- Cancer
5. Improved self-confidence
Regardless of your
- age
- size
- weight
Exercise increases your self-confidence and your perception of yourself.
6. Improved sleep
Moderate exercise can have similar effects as a sleeping pill.
Try exercising 5-6 hours before you sleep.
Exercise raises your core temperature and when your temperature drops back down to normal a few hours later, it tells your body it's time to sleep.
7. Increase productivity & creativity
Exercises boosts:
- Creativity
- Productivity
- Spontaneous thinking
Studies show that workers who exercise are more productive & have more energy than their peers.
