How to naturally stop and even reverse hair loss.
A thread.
*Standard disclaimer that this does not constitute medical advice*
The fact that hair loss is so common nowadays actually proves that our lifestyle is more important than genetic factors when it comes to hair loss.
Hair loss is not entirely genetic besides the typical 10% and
obviously androgens are not to blame for hair loss since testosterone, LH, DHT and so on are declining to a very alarming rate yet more and more people experience hair loss.
Plus, if direct application of DHT does not cause hair loss, then why are you blaming hair loss on DHT?
On the other hand, estrogen creams can cause hair loss in even weeks.
DHT in the scalps rises as a result of a rise in estrogen/aromatase, prolactin and testosterone antagonists in general.
Now that we got these out of the way, on this thread we will mention both some things that you can do right now in order to stop hair loss but will also mention the most common root causes of hair loss.
Cause 1: Suboptimal thyroid function
We’ve been talking a lot about the thyroid gland lately but you have to understand that this gland governs our entire metabolism.
Without healthy regulation of thyroid hormones, the entire body will suffer.
Most people today do not experience hair loss, but hair thinning which is a metabolic problem and in order to stop or reverse it, we need to address our metabolic health and thus the health of our thyroid.
Hair follicles are very sensitive to the thyroid hormone T4 and if we
are not converting T4 into T3 effectively (*) we can easily get hair loss since we are overstimulating the follicle without encouraging any actual growth.
This is one reason hair loss is such a common side effect of T4 medications like synthroid.
Functional hypothyroidism will lead to suboptimal levels of progesterone as well which keeps our hair in the anagen phase.
(*)The main issues that lead to conversion problems and are the following:
1)Not enough carbohydrates such as fruit and unheated honey.
Don’t be afraid of these carbs if you're getting sunlight.
70% of the conversion happens in the liver and the liver can function optimally only when there are sufficient energy stores of glycogen.
This makes fruit the perfect fuel for the liver since fructose does not require
insulin to get in the cell.
2)Not enough sunlight / Low vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D has been shown to increase type 2 deiodinase (DIO2) levels and peripheral conversion of THs.
Also vitamin D with some niacinamide, can even reverse steroid driven hair loss.
So get plenty of sunlight each day and check your vitamin D levels.
3)Endotoxins
More about this in the gut part.
4)Stressful states such as improper sleep, overtraining and drinking alcohol on a regular basis.
Stress will raise cortisol and this will shift the thyroid into
a more inactive state, elevating reverse T3 levels rather than converting free T4 into free T3.
Besides this, stressful states lead to adrenal hyperactivity (keep the adrenals safe by vitamin C, E and salt) which causes an increased activity of the aromatase enzyme, converting
testosterone into estrogen and since estrogen raises the telogen/anagen ratio, hair loss will occur.
Last but not least high levels of cortisol will reduce the synthesis of hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans in the scalp which deters the normal activity of hair follicles and can
lead to hair loss.
5) Not enough thyroid supportive nutrients such as vitamin A, copper, beta carotene, zinc and selenium all of which can be found in organ meats, oysters and squash or pumpkin.
So a small daily intake of each one (30 gr of beef liver, 4 oysters and 50gr of
pumpkin) can help prevent this.
6)Not enough bioavailable calcium.
This will lead to an increase of PTH which will block some blood vessels in the scalp since it will direct calcium into the soft tissue.
So, some eggshell powder in case your gut health is fine or some goat’s
feta cheese (raw dairy are a complete different story) while making sure that you have enough calcium regulators in your system (don’t forget magnesium) will help this.
Don’t expose yourself to sodium fluoride as well and consider boron in case you have megadosed on it.
7)Oxidative stress
Oxidative stress and an increase in reactive oxygen species induce apoptosis of both astrocytes and thyrocytes(through 8-oxodG production) predisposing them to thyroid dysfunction.
Now oxidative stress is controlled in the thyroid via synthesis of glutathione
peroxidase, which inactivates sources of oxidative stress (hydrogen peroxide and so on).
So basically support glutathione production by eating some oysters, bone marrow , balancing the amino acid profile with some gelatin, magnesium and get enough selenium + B vitamins from
animal products such as red meat and egg yolks.
Note on B vitamins: If you are a woman on birth control pills, you can not fix a B vitamin deficiency unless you get off them.
(One of the most common reasons why women on birth control experience chronic fatigue).
Cause 2: Hyperprolactinemia
In case a pregnant woman did not have anemia or thyroid issues (from hypothyroidism to Hashimoto’s) which can cause hair loss by themselves, then after giving birth she noticed that her hair shed even if she did not have this happen again in her life.
Now one of the causes for this is elevated prolactin levels (other ones being a decrease in progesterone (same reason why hair loss can occur during menopause for women)), since prolactin triggers the body to make milk for breastfeeding among other things.
Prolactin can interrupt the hair growth cycle, forcing hair follicles into the catagen phase (if you’re experiencing telogen effluvium get your prolactin levels checked).
First of all, take care of your thyroid as you just saw since PTH can increase prolactin.
Then make sure you have enough prolactin antagonists such as vitamin D, vitamin B6, zinc and vitamin E (don’t supplement vitamin E or vitamin B6).
Now since prolactin is a dopamine antagonist, if you’re also experiencing signs of low dopamine you can try Noah’s (@NoahRyanCo)
favorite supplement, taurine and make sure that you’re consuming enough choline in order to increase the densities of dopamine receptors.
Last but not least, elevated prolactin can be a sign of poor estrogen metabolism (one cause for this could be unhealthy gut bacterial balance
since the estrobolome is a subset of gut bacteria that are crucial for estrogen metabolism).
So also pay attention to the gut healing part and xenoestrogen detox part since they can be underlying causes for increased prolactin.
Last but not least aromatase can also increase
prolactin, so no grains, minimum PUFA consumption and definitely not from sources such as canola oil, get that fat soluble vitamins in, sip on some chamomile and lose fat if you have to (over 15-20% bf).
Cause 3: Leaky gut
Any sort of gut problem will always lead to an increase of pro inflammatory cytokines and thus hair loss sooner or later.
Activated NKG2D+CD8+ cells produce the Th1 cytokine interferon-Îł, which leads to the disruption of immune tolerance of hair follicles and
the exposure of self-antigens.
And this is without even mentioning endotoxins, systemic inflammation and the deficiencies that gut problems can lead to which also will cause hair loss.
So: drink bone broth between meals, walk post meals, optimize HCL (don’t drink too much
water and eat an animal based diet), use some binders for endotoxins such as pectins and AC, coconut oil, blackeed oil and bitters + avoid all gut irritants such as coffee, alcohol, overtraining, tap water, not sleeping, not getting sunlight, PUFAs, food additives, a. sweeteners.
Cause 3: Damaged blood vessels / blood volume problems.
The root of the hair is made up of protein cells and is nourished by blood from nearby blood vessels.
Now when there is not sufficient circulation towards the scalp this means that there will be not sufficient delivery
of oxygen, nutrients, glucose, the tension in the scalp will increase and so on.
One of the main causes for this, is insulin resistance/suboptimal glucose metabolism.
We’ve known for ages that excessive insulin secretion damages the blood vessels.
So, first of all don’t go zero carb (you may need to go lower carb though).
First, cut out inferior fats such as canola oil and minimize PUFAs in order to keep the pancreas safe.
Then, make sure that you resistance train 3 times a week, get 10K steps in a day, get plenty of
sunlight and address the nutrients that are most crucial for glucose metabolism.
These are:
1)Vitamin D
2)Vitamin K2
3)B1, B2 and B3
4)Magnesium
Now, all stress hormones (estrogen, cortisol, adrenaline and so on) decrease circulation, so minimize stress both through dietary
tools such as not being on a calorie deficit (a stressful state by default), keeping the right kind of carbs in (seasonal fruit and some unheated honey) and so on, but also through mental practises as well.
Using some thiamine for the benefits of C02, can be very helpful at this
stage as well.
Ginkgo will of course greatly improve blood circulation.
Just do not consume it with cinnamon or any form of B3 unless you want to faint.
Niacinamide is a great tool for increasing blood flow as well and that’s why many men who suffer from ED, benefit from it.
Last but not least when it comes to this cause, excessive serotonin needs to be addressed since it reduces blood flow (reason why SSRI induced ED gets cured by niacinamide a lot of the time (if you’re on SSRIs don’t start popping niacin though)).
First of all address any possible deficiency in all B vitamins since it will increase serotonin production.
Then drink a cup of bone broth between meals for glycine to mitigate the excessive tryptophan (a serotonin agonist) that comes from a lot of animal products
and consider ginkgo.
Now, depending on your gut health, things like carrots and ginger which lowers serotonin receptivity in the gut can either benefit you or destroy you.
So, consume slowly and carefully.
Now since nnEMF can also cause tension in the scalp (and cause hair
loss by itself), stop wearing airpods or bluetooth devices in general in your head and focus on grounding daily in order to discharge.
