I've been hiring people almost every day now for my new startup that I’m building in stealth.
9 things that I looked at before hiring them.
A thread🧵
1. Paying attention to the attitude
The way the candidate speaks & conducts themselves speaks a lot about their personality.
You can always differentiate between confidence & arrogance.
2. Past experience outside their current job
Check if they have contributed in any way other than their primary job roles in their current company.
It shows that they are enthusiastic about work & are flexible to do more when needed.
3. Check the cultural fit
Try and understand if their expectations match that of the company expectations.
There are individuals who are willing to work in a high-paced startup environment.
And then there are some who prefer a strict structure in the workplace.
4. Past professional experience
See if they have relevant experience with regard to which they are being interviewed for.
When hiring for an executive position ensure they have the professional experience to take up the job responsibilities.
5. Honesty
If a candidate is open about how he/she couldn’t do something because of XYZ reasons & is not embarrassed to hide it.
It shows that they are honest about themselves.
Most often people hide their flaws & failures & only exaggerate their success.
6. Listening skills
If a candidate interrupts you during the interview, it implies they aren't good listeners.
Patience is one of the core skills you may look for when hiring for a sales/customer care team.
7. Confidence
This not only pertains to how they speak.
If a candidate can talk about what your company is doing well & where it can improve.
It is a great sign that they are not scared to speak their mind. And shows they did enough research about the company.
8. Their preparation
This is a hard nut to crack.
Often people fumble out of anxiety & fear during the interview.
So, check if they are at least completing the answers even if they are taking pauses in between.
This shows that they have come prepared.
9. Extreme thoughts
Look for any discriminatory comments during the interview.
If they dislike or are biased toward a community/religion, it is a red flag for a team member.
When hiring such people do expect chaos at work.
