People make split-second decisions about what to engage with on social.
-What’s in it for me?
-Is this worth my time?
-What will I learn?
I've helped 100s of people write scroll-stopping hooks that resonate with & engage their audience.
It all starts with this 1 key principle:
Get. Freaking. Specific.
The more specific, the more it will resonate with/captivate/intrigue your *intended* audience.
You want to speak to a common problem or desire.
In the language that they use.
And present solutions they need/desire.
Let's get meta:
For this thread, my intended audience is people writing on social.
You want to write hooks that stop the scroll.
So your audience engages with your content + you gain authority.
But some of your content falls flat, and you're keen to acquire knowledge that helps.
I know this because I'm engaged with my audience.
I see your struggles. I read your posts. I've also been there myself.
To learn more about *your* audience:
-Speak to them directly
-Follow them & study their posts & comments
-Run a survey or poll
Knowledge is key.
Audience knowledge is critical.
But even with it, it's easy to slip into generalizations.
Here's an exercise you can do before writing to make sure you get specific:
(I filled it in for this thread so you can see example answers)
Q: Why should my audience read this?
E.g.
A: They're struggling to write specific content that engages and moves the needle and need help.
Q: What will they learn?
E.g.
A: Why it's important to get specific in hooks (generalized language/pain points/outcomes are harder to relate to and less interesting).
Q: How will it help them?
E.g.
A: Understanding *why* specific beats general is empowering, so ideally they'll test specificity in their next hooks/posts and see how it impacts engagement + authority.
Q: What outcome will they achieve?
E.g.
A: Attract their ideal audience, overcome low engagement, and build more meaningful connections.
Q: Why should they trust me?
A: I've helped 100s of people overcome engagement hurdles + I'm awesome (😉)
Scroll up and read my hook for this thread.
Notice how I incorporated these answers into it.
I used language you'd relate to, added my credibility, & piqued your curiosity.
Then I got specific in the body.
I answered what + why + how.
It's actionable and helpful.
TLDR:
Specific > General
Answer these Q's before you write:
-Why should my audience read this?
-What will they learn?
-How will it help them?
-What outcome will they achieve?
-Why should they trust me?
Social posts and online resources are helpful but 1:1 time with experts + live feedback can massively accelerate your learning.
