Most people suck at finding operators.
But top-tier talent can make you millions.
Here's a simple framework I've used to find more "10x hires" for my businesses:
“Where do you find operators to run your businesses?”
I don’t. Usually, they find me.
There is no better feeling than finding a great operator.
The key is finding someone who:
• Has the right moral compass
• Happily takes work off your plate
• Is better than you
*In that order.
My specialty is starting.
I think of it as getting the biz from 0 to 1.
My operator gets it from 1 to 100,000,000.
The best way to find your operator?
Set them up to find you first.
7 notes on hiring:
1. Social Media = Hiring Superhighway
Social media is a flexible asset.
In this case, it’s a hiring funnel.
Build in public, it's a free job posting.
2. No Lazy Job Listings
Post your operator search on your socials, but don’t make it:
• Lazy
• Boring
• Corporate
Remember, it's not a responsibility list, it's an advertisement.
Great example from: @ShaanVP.
Unique, captivating. Feels like a golden ticket to mentorship.
@ShaanVP 3. Build in Public.
Competence attracts competence.
Do you look like:
• the kind of person in charge of a growing business?
• you run a well thought out team?
• a boss that doesn’t suck?
Show, don’t tell.
@ShaanVP This is one of the many reasons why I write about how I run my companies.
Bonus points: then you hire someone who already likes your work.
@ShaanVP 4. Scare Away Bad Hires
Some talent can be great, but not great for YOU.
Repel the people you don’t want:
• Share unpopular opinions
• Send negative signals
• Be a contrarian
Attract the people who:
• Think creatively
• Question everything
• Can handle disagreement
@ShaanVP For example:
I don’t feel the need to hire people who would rather stop giving 110% than negotiate their role.
And if saying so pisses people off, great.
@ShaanVP 5. The Friend Flywheel
Collect good humans.
Step 1: Keep 5 in your close network. (you get access to the 5 close humans in theirs, etc, etc)
Step 2: Mention regularly that you’re looking for someone who wants to run a business with no cash in
@ShaanVP I’m constantly sending out DMs like this for everything.
It’s how I find most of the people who work for me.
Some misses, mostly hits.
@ShaanVP 6. Get Them On-Board Before Hiring
Shape their values to align with your company’s.
If that can’t happen, why would you go through with the hire?
@ShaanVP So many people can’t describe to their friends what they do for a living.
As a biz owner, I can’t stand that.
I give them the exact words to explain it:
@ShaanVP 7. Trial Project
Everyone knows interviews suck, but no one does anything about it.
Nobody gets hired at Contrarian Thinking without a test.
If they don’t really want it before they have it, will they want it more when they get it?
@ShaanVP You’re literally trusting someone with your business.
Figure out upfront if they can really handle it.
Here's an example we did for an admin hire. Cater tasks to the role:
@ShaanVP Finding biz operators comes down to:
• Being loud in the right places.
• Building a funnel to lead the right people to your feet.
• Never taking a hire lightly & making sure they don’t either.
@ShaanVP There are thousands of methods for hiring but those are 7 of mine...
