Want to learn consumer psychology?
Study casinos.
8 reasons why the house always wins
๐Ÿงต
1/ Chips, Not Cash
Chips may represent value.
But the pain of losing 1 chip is far lesser than the pain of losing $10.
2/ No Clocks
Next time you sit in the casino, look around. You'll find no clocks.
Why?
They don't keep track of time, hoping you won't either.
3/ No Windows
With no concept of light or dark, it's hard to tell the time that's passed.
And the longer they keep you there, the more they will win.
4/ The Maze-Like Design
Easy to get in. Hard to get out.
It's no coincidence that you must cross all games on the way to the exit.
5/ The Jackpot Hype
With loud alarms and celebrations, when someone hits the jackpot, casinos reignite hope in all of us.
That's all we need to keep going until we finally win.
Or, more likely, finish all our money.
6/ Reward Programs
Almost 70% of casino patrons participate in a loyalty program.
Free meals, entries, and points for every dollar played.
All of a sudden, losing $1,000, on one hand, is justified as an investment lol.
7/ The Near-Miss Strategy
Casinos are the king of teases.
That row of 7s...
Far enough to take your money, but close enough to keep you going.
If only it ever went like this
8/ The Free Drinks
Alcohol is known to reduce control and hinder decision-making.
But you probably know that.
Let's just hope you don't remember your losses the next day.
That's all from me!
I wrote this thread because I hate when human psychology is used for the worse.
But I love when it's used by marketers to help both parties win :)
If you're interested in the latter, you should check out my free newsletter.
It's called Psychology of Marketing

TL; DR
How casinos leverage psychology (against us):
1/ Chips instead of cash
2/ No clocks around
3/ No windows either
4/ Maze-like design
5/ The Jackpot Hype
6/ Reward Programs
7/ The Near-miss Strategy
8/ Free Drinks
Are there any other cool nudges I'm missing? Or other brands that implement these tactics a little differently?
