Most people think writing isn't visual. They're WRONG.
Looks impact not just whether people read some text,
but how they react and the EMOTIONS they feel.
11 examples of next-level tweet formatting:
(copy these)
Before we dive in, keep an eye out for:
• Empty space
• Sentence length
• Shapes created by lists
• Use of punctuation marks, numbers, and symbols
Good tweets / linkedin posts, etc... make use of all of the above to draw the reader in and signal relationships between ideas.
1/ Big list by @ericasmyname
All list items in similar relative size creates a visual rectangle that arrests your attention in a specific space.
@ericasmyname 2/ Three quotes by @thePhilRivers
Alternating step-by-step numbers and "quotes" draws in the reader, as if the writer were speaking out the examples.
@ericasmyname @thePhilRivers 3/ Bullet point mountain by @bbourque
See how the line length builds up and then pulls back?
This draws the eye neatly from the opening line to the closing CTA, capturing each tip along the way.
@ericasmyname @thePhilRivers @bbourque 4/ Repetition triangle by @TheDannyNaz
Starting each line (except the last) with the same construction creates a hypnotic, effortless experience.
The final twist breaks the pattern for max impact.
Overall shape is considered.
@ericasmyname @thePhilRivers @bbourque @TheDannyNaz 5/ Symbol subhead by @hayden_flohr
This is a body tweet in a thread.
By using a larger emoji/icon up top, the subheader stands out, while still leaving the actual bullet point symbol for structure below.
@ericasmyname @thePhilRivers @bbourque @TheDannyNaz @hayden_flohr 6/ Flipped triangles by @jonbrosio
The shape of Jon's first bullet triangle builds in length, culminating in a powerful midpoint.
Then the second list of bullets pulls back, offering a second side to a problem we may not have realized.
@ericasmyname @thePhilRivers @bbourque @TheDannyNaz @hayden_flohr @jonbrosio 7/ Perfect TL;DR by @IAmClintMurphy
Even if the ideas in your thread came in a different order, you can arrange them by length for an ultra-smooth summary at the end.
@ericasmyname @thePhilRivers @bbourque @TheDannyNaz @hayden_flohr @jonbrosio @IAmClintMurphy 8/ Tower of action by @sanathemonster
Verb that noun, baby!
The repetition and extreme verticality here enhance the excitement and action-oriented nature of the post.
@ericasmyname @thePhilRivers @bbourque @TheDannyNaz @hayden_flohr @jonbrosio @IAmClintMurphy @sanathemonster >> Pattern break by @Jayyanginspires
In this list, each action followers the next. Jay breaks from a usual bullet symbol and uses the double triangle arrow (>>) instead, making the connection between each line stronger.
@ericasmyname @thePhilRivers @bbourque @TheDannyNaz @hayden_flohr @jonbrosio @IAmClintMurphy @sanathemonster @Jayyanginspires 10/ Numbers...DOTS? +Punctuation by @eliot_rathe
Eliot elegantly uses all sorts of visual cues here, but none feel egregious.
He jumps us from CAPS to ellipsis to numbers and symbols, all while keeping the copy as short as possible.
Guess what?
You can't help but read it.
@ericasmyname @thePhilRivers @bbourque @TheDannyNaz @hayden_flohr @jonbrosio @IAmClintMurphy @sanathemonster @Jayyanginspires @eliot_rathe 11/ (Parenthetical commentary) by @thatroblennon
Here I use quick comments inside parentheses to give you a second layer of information so you can understand a complex topic quickly. It also makes a stressful topic a bit fun.
