Have you left your body? Here how to get back into it:
When we experience trauma, chronic stress, or long term isolation we leave our bodies.
We go into an autopilot survival state.
This state of dissociation allows us to be physically present but mentally gone. We can get through life but we are lost in thought, numb, and not present.
Autopilot looks and feels like:
- constantly being lost in your own thoughts
- losing large periods of time
- forgetting or losing things, regularly
- feeling completely detached or like things aren't 'real' around you
- numbness
-racing thoughts
In order to heal, we have to leave the incessant mental chatter of the mind to get get back into our body
When we regularly practice getting into our bodies we can be: present, more connected in our relationships, and allow our nervous system to regulate.
How to get back into your body:
1. Paint, draw, write, or journal: Creativity is a natural state of human expression that often gets overlooked in the stress of life. Being creative naturally brings us back into our bodies. Create often.
2. Cold exposure: 30 seconds to 1 minute cold showers are a great practice of being within the body. It also allows us to build up our 'window of tolerance' or our stress resilience. Breathe and allow yourself to just fully feel.
3. Dance: dance is the bodies way of expressing itself. Put on your favorite songs and dance in your kitchen. Don't worry about how you look, just let your body move in ways that feel good.
4. Take on a new project: start a small garden, learn how to play an instrument, start a new collection of thing you love, re-arrange your bedroom. This breaks up our autopilot patterns, and brings us into the present moment.
5. Cuddle: cuddling releases endorphins and brings us back into the body to experience a safe, connected space.
