Men:
Testosterone levels have dropped 40% in the last 20 years.
If you feel like half the man your grandfather was, it's because you are.
Here are 12 science-backed reasons why:
1. Obesity
Obesity is not only accepted as normal today, but it is celebrated. Obesity is the #1 cause of low testosterone levels. Extra fat converts testosterone to estrogen. Get rid of the belly fat as it is the biggest problem.
2. Insulin Resistance
Insulin resistance causes diabetes and many other chronic health issues. It slows down your metabolism, including the production of testosterone. Over 50% of men are insulin resistant, with another 25% borderline.
3. Alcohol
Alcohol causes damage to your testicles, and decreases hypothalamus and pituitary function decreasing overall testosterone production. Beer in particular is problematic as hops contain phytoestrogens, suppressing T.
4. Low fat diet
Testosterone is a steroid hormone that is made from cholesterol. If you are following a low fat diet, you are depriving your body of the key building block of testosterone. Healthy fats are crucial, eat them often.
5. Sugar
One soda will reduce testosterone by 25% immediately and the numbers stay suppressed for hours. When sugar is a staple of your diet, you are constantly suppressing testosterone. Remove sugar from your diet.
6. Sedentary lifestyle
Most people sit all day then go home and sit on the couch the rest of the night. Weight training stimulates testosterone production. If you aren’t regularly resistance training your levels will drop and muscles will shrink due to less demand.
7. Sleep
The average man sleeps less than 7 hours per night. Sleeping 8 hours or more can boost testosterone up to 15%. Lack of sleep also increases cortisol and insulin resistance, further reducing testosterone.
8. Plastic
The structure of BPA, found in plastics and other items, is similar to estrogen and disrupts the normal action of testosterone in the body. You’ll get exposed to it from receipt paper, plastic water bottles, food cans, coffee cups, and plastic food containers.
9. Sunscreen/Lotion/Body Wash
Most cosmetics and body care products contain preservatives called parabens. Parabens have been linked to reducing testosterone and causing abnormally shaped sperm with low motility. Parabens have been banned in the EU due to health concerns.
10. Soy
Soy is not a meat replacement. It is an inferior source of protein and also contains phytoestrogens, estrogen like compounds, which lower testosterone levels. These chemicals can cause symptoms without even altering hormone levels.
11. Processed baked goods
Most baked goods you buy at the store are high in trans fats. Trans fats not only reduce testosterone, but have also been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. These foods are on the never consume list.
12. Seed oils
These oils are high in polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs). Studies show that intake of PUFAs can decrease your testosterone for as long as 6-10 hours after eating. Seed oils also contain high amounts of omega 6 fats which can shrink testicles, decreasing T production.
Habits that will raise testosterone:
- Lift weights
- Sleep 8 hours
- Decrease stress
- Fix insulin reistance
- Cut out sugar/alcohol
