What's so good about Coconut Water? ๐Ÿ’ฆ
This ancient "nut" 70ft in the sky might just reverse aging, inhibit cancer growth & reduce the risk of degenerative disease
And of course, it's the best electrolyte drink money can buy (yes, better than Prime ๐Ÿ‘€ )
Before diving into the benefits, let me give you some context
See, the coconut tree is known as the TREE OF LIFE ๐Ÿฅฅ ๐ŸŒด
In the Philippines, it's said to be the fountain of youth. In other cultures, it's seen as a symbol of abundance, luck & fertility.
It's also incredibly versatile. Coconut husks were used to make ropes. Coconut oil's so therapeutic Ray Peat almost wrote an entire book on it.
Just about every part of the coconut is beneficial
But why is it even called "coconut" when it's a fruit?
Back in the 15th century, Vasco da Gama and his crew brought coconuts on board stay hydrated. They also burned the husks to cook and keep warm.
They started calling it "Coco" after "Cocuruto" which means Crown of the Head", since it looked like a grinning face
As it spread across the world, the name Coco-Nut caught on, because of how much it looked like a nut (even though it's a fruit)
Okay, so what makes coconut water so special?
It all comes down to its unique chemical breakdown:
โœน Electrolyte powerhouse
โœน Phytohormones like cytokines
โœน Antioxidant compounds
1. Electrolytes
For starters, its probably the best electrolyte drink you can get in the world
See, the purpose of drinking water is to ingest essential trace minerals that are crucial building blocks for your body
This is why you're doing yourself a disservice if you're drinking 100% distilled, reverse-osmosis water
The water you're drinking there is dead
Sure, the bad stuff like fluoride is gone, but so is the good stuff. You need minerals, and boy does coconut water have them.
The one thing that makes coconut water special is its the high potassium content
Most people fail to get enough potassium in their diet, with over 98% of Americans reported deficient
If you have any of these symptoms, that might be you:
500ml of Coconut Water gives you roughly 1250mg of potassiumโ—
The most popular hydration drink on the planet ( @ksi & @loganpaul's PRIME) has 700mg of potassium for 500ml
But what about the other minerals?
Sodium๐Ÿง‚:
Prime = 10mg
Coconut Water = 525mg
Magnesium ๐Ÿ—ฟ:
Prime = 124mg
Coconut Water = 125mg
And we haven't even talked about all the other ingredients
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to shit on Prime, or any other electrolyte drink here for no reason
All I'm saying is, 70ft in the sky, nature has formulated it's very own blend that seems perfect in its own way
Why do I say that?
It's skewed towards potassium and has less sodium and magnesium, of which the latter you can get more in your food or through topical or oral magnesium chloride, and salting whenever necessary
Unless you're drinking straight, plain water?
I see no reason why you'd go out of your way to purchase an electrolyte drink, especially when they add artificial sweeteners like sucralose just to market the "low sugar" angle
You're far better off purchasing electrolyte blends from brands like ConcenTrace or @SolSupps that give you just the trace minerals like sodium, magnesium & potassium that you can add to your water
Especially if you have distilled or RO water. At least that's what I'd do.
And it's not just the electrolytes that make coconut water such a powerful drink
It contains this compound that's been found to promote anti-cancer, anti-aging and anti-clotting effects
2. Phytohormones (Cytokines)
The compound is known as Cytokines โ€” small proteins that have these incredible therapeutic properties.
Guess what? Coconut water is the richest natural dietary source of cytokines
The anti-aging effect also lowers the risk of degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's
More research needs to be done on the various types of Cytokines present in coconut water like Kinetin, which show promising signs for reversing diseases including the likes of cancer
Some in-vitro studies (experiments done outside a living person or animal) have shown promising effects in suppressing tumor cells
2. Coconut water also has powerful antioxidant effects
It contains two special compounds that repair the damage modern Frankenstein foods like seed oils and artificial dyes are inflicting on our bodies
Shikimic acid and caffeic acid have been shown to not only protect against oxidative stress but improve cholesterol markers and liver health
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
These are not even everything. While there's still room for so much more studies, coconut water has been linked with the following as well:
โ€ข Protecting against kidney stone formation
โ€ขย Lowering blood pressure levels
โ€ขย Supporting heart health
They're a miracle fruit.
So now that you know how beneficial coconut water is, make sure you get the right stuff
A lot of companies know about the therapeutic effects so they use it to market the product heavily โ€” even if they only use a small %
Always look for products that say 100% coconut water. Add in other flavors on your own, like cutting it with watermelon juice for eg
Just as the case with yogurt, the quality of anything pre-flavored is almost always sub-par. You really don't know what these companies are using.
Also, please. Coconut water is perfectly healthy for you to drink โ€” especially before, after or intra workout.
To avoid it just because it has sugar is asinine!
"Coconuts are the fruit of palm trees. And as we have bread and wine, oil and vinegar, so they get all these things from the said trees.
With two of these palm trees, a whole family of ten can sustain itself. The coconut trees last for a hundred years."
โ€” Antonio Pigafetta
