Shampoo is a scam. It's unnecessary at best & is causing damage to your hair, scalp, and overall health.
Here's how you can:
- Manage oil buildup
- Balance scalp pH
- Improve hair thickness
without exposing yourself to hormone-disrupting chemicals:
I haven't used shampoo (or conditioner) in over a year.
I always hated how it made my feel. but it wasn't until I started researching the ingredients in my Head & Shoulders that I knew I had to quit cold turkey
Now I only put in my hair things I would eat
Shampoos are chemical cocktails. They're loaded with substances linked to hormone issues & even cancer
Their goal is short-term satisfaction. They want a shelf-stable product that makes your hair 'feel' clean & keeps you dependent on shampoo.
Ingredients you need to avoid:
1. Sulfates
Commonly used to remove dirt & oil from the scalp. Can cause long-term hair damage, dryness & scalp irritation
2. Parabens
Common preservative. Known endocrine disruptor (mimics estrogen)
3. Phthalates
Helps fragrance stick to hair. Potent endocrine disruptor & absolutely awful for the environment
4. Polyethylene Glycols (PEG)
Petroleum derivative. Commonly contaminated with carcinogens like 1,4-dioxane. Dry out your scalp & disrupts pH balance
5. Formaldehyde (& formaldehyde releasors)
Well-known carcinogen. Readily absorbed by the skin & can even cause respiratory issues
6. Triclosan
Antibacterial. Endocrine disruptor that accumulates in fat cells & keeps body in state of toxicity
7. Dimethicone
Used for its 'protective purposes'. It builds up as residue on your scalp, clogging follicles & preventing moisture from getting into your hair
Other harmful agents to avoid:
- Fragrances
- Toluene
- Resorcinol
Every time you use shampoo, you run the risk of absorbing these harmful chemicals (at a 10x ratio compared to the rest of your skin)
These chemicals also go down your drain, polluting future drinking water, rivers, & lakes
Shampoo strips your hair of its natural oils, forcing your scalp to overcompensate & produce MORE oil. This throws you into a vicious cycle of needing to shampoo more frequently.
You must break this cycle. It might take a week or two, but the improvement in hair health is worth it.
Some people will have better transitions than others (mine was seamless).
Here are a few things you can do to improve your scalp & hair health, without any nasty chemicals:
Filter shower water
99% chance your water is full of harmful contaminants. showering in tap water is a common cause of hair shedding, acne, & other skin/scalp issues
Check out EWG's tap water database to see what contaminants are in your area:
ewg.org
Exfoliate:
Just because you're not using shampoo doesn't mean you shouldn't clean your hair.
Use a scalp brush or wooden comb in the shower to break down any buildup & make sure to wash thoroughly
Apple Cider Vinegar Wash:
ACV is a panacea. Its incredible and removing buildup, balancing pH, and keeping infections, inflammation & itchiness at bay
1.5 tbsp to 1 cup of water is ideal ratio. Massage it in & leave on scalp for 3-5 min pre-shower. Rinse well
Egg wash:
Eggs are nutrient powerhouses
- Vitamin A, D, E
- B12
- Biotin
- Iodine
- Selenium
- Pantothenic acid
Do once every few weeks to fortify hair & scalp. Whisk 1 pasture raised egg in a bowl & let sit in your hair for a few minutes
Saltwater:
Ocean water is the best thing for your hair imo.
I don't use egg wash or ACV that frequently. I just go in the ocean & rinse with fresh water after. If you live near the sea you better take advantage of it
I have no issues with my hair getting too oily. As a matter of fact I often put oils in it to make it more manageable.
Some effective hair moisturizers:
- Jojoba oil
- Olive oil (homage @SolBrah)
- Tallow
- Lard
- Castor oil
A little goes a long way, I use as natural pomade
TLDR:
Shampoo = unnecessary & damaging
Exfoliate your scalp, filter tap water, use apple cider vinegar & egg washes, & use natural oils to rehydrate on occasion
If you're dealing with excess scalp irritation, psoriasis, or dandruff, that's often an indicator of something deeper
Addressing bacterial & fungal overgrowth in your gut has a strong correlation with improvements in skin health
Results will vary based on predisposition, hair length & hair type. You can also look at 'shampoo free' cleansers called co-wash as a less damaging alternative.
You've been fooled into thinking you need shampoo. It's a rebill scam by the big guys like Johnson & Johnson.
Your hair will be better off returning to its natural state. Stronger, thicker, sleeker. Break the cycle. Return to monke
