Investment in a long term committed relationship has so many emotional advantages, but it's difficult work that not everyone is ready for.
Here's why it's worth it:
We learn how to love from our parent figures.
They give us our first education on: what love looks like, how we show up in relationships, and what we expect within them.
Many of (like myself) were raised in dysfunctional homes where we didn't get a healthy love education.
And that's ok, because we can still create it. It just means a lot of: inner work, self reflection, and open communication.
The benefits of a long term committed relationship:
1. A security of knowing someone has your best interest: spending the time to learn each others triggers and navigate conflict allows us to have the peacefulness that comes with truly trusting someone.
2. A person who will give you honest feedback (even when it hurts): having a person you trust who reflects back to you parts of yourself you might not be aware of is a priceless gift.
3. Mutual evolution: through intentional work, relationships become a safe space for mutual evolution where we can change and shift even when we trigger our partners. The goal is not to change our partners, but to meet each new version of them.
4. Healing childhood wounds: through difficult conversations, learning each others triggers, and being vulnerable we heal our childhood wounds in our adult relationships.
5. Creating a shared life vision: the vision will be different for everyone, and with communication and team work, an intentional life can be created, rather than just unconsciously repeating cycles.
None of this is easy. There will be moments of deep pain, suffering, and confusion. And, it's worth it.
What has investing in a secure relationship done for your life?
