Working in commission sales was my gateway drug to entrepreneurship
I sold around $4 million worth of high-end luxury clothes to the rich and famous of Vancouver from 2012 to 2016.
It was one hell of an experience that changed my life...
I worked in retail during and after university.
I was lazy and didn’t use my degree as leverage. Working retail was hard but easy. Long hours but low cognitive work.
It allowed me to be a zombie half the week while I recovered from nights out and partying most weekends.
By accident in my early 30s I ended up with 10 years of retail management experience.
But I got bored of shit pay. I decided to see if I could take the same skills and double or triple my wages.
It turned out I could.
By going from mall retail to high-end retail. I went from selling $20 no-name tee shirts to $500 D&G tees.
While working in luxury retail I also sold high-end suits. Zegna, Tom Ford, Canali, and Brunello Cucinelli.
The men who bought these items were typically successful business owners, lawyers, CEOs, and entrepreneurs.
95% of them were super chill. A lot easier to talk to and assist than 80% of the other people who shop for luxury but can’t afford it.
When selling a suit or building a wardrobe for the holiday season or a vacation you could spend 2-4 hours with a client.
You basically hang out with successful people and get to chat with them.
My 4 years working in this environment changed my life.
Why?
These men challenged me. Told me I could do something. Explained how they worked shit jobs at some point.
Talked about how they took risks and bet on themselves.
They were willing to ask me questions and willing to answer mine.
They took me out for coffee. Made book recommendations. One even introduced me to his daughter.
Still not sure if he was trying to set me up but I was engaged to my wife at the time, haha.
I was left with an entrepreneurial spirit because of my time in luxury sales.
I don’t think I would be the man I am today without those experiences.
I don't think I would be a solopreneur and coach without the mindsets and thinking I was exposed to.
3 key lessons I learned:
β€’ The people and environments you surround yourself with are influential and important.
β€’ Successful people had the confidence to bet on themselves and not rely on the system.
β€’ 95% of successful people are humble AF and want to see others win.
