8 common morning habits destroying your productivity:
1. Pressing snooze
Be honest with yourself:
Snoozing for 9 extra minutes isn’t doing you any good.
Rather than making you feel more rested, it simply disrupts your sleep/wake cycle.
Plug your phone in away from your bed, so you have to get up to turn off your alarm.
2. Scrolling your phone
The average person spends 5-6 hours a day on their phone.
Checking your notifications at the beginning of the day kills your momentum.
Make it a habit to not check your phone for the first 30 minutes of your day.
3. Lack of movement
It’s easy to fall into the trap of waking up and getting straight to work.
Starting your morning with physical activity:
• Reduces stress
• Increases alertness
• Boosts mental clarity
Just 10 minutes of movement massively improves your productivity.
4. Excess caffeine
There’s nothing wrong with a cup of coffee in the morning.
But too much caffeine can cause:
• Anxiety
• Insomnia
• Chest pain
For sustained energy, consume your caffeine of choice about 2 hours after you wake up when your cortisol levels peak.
5. Making too many decisions
Like many founders, I wear the same clothes every day.
We do this to avoid “decision fatigue.”
Reduce decision fatigue by:
• Eating the same breakfast
• Simplifying your wardrobe
• Laying out your clothes the night before
6. Waking up at random times
When your body has a natural rhythm, it operates more efficiently.
Waking up at random times prevents this from happening.
Waking up at the same time every day improves your:
• Energy
• Wellbeing
• Sleep quality
Set a routine and adhere to it.
7. Eating a high-carb breakfast
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!”
Cereal companies created this slogan to sell sugar for breakfast.
Start your day with a high-protein meal to keep your energy levels stable.
I start each day with 6 eggs and a banana.
8. Not having a morning routine
Replace these bad habits by building a system of healthy habits.
Your morning routine doesn’t have to be 3 hours long.
Start with basics:
• Walk
• Stretch
• Drink water
• Eat a nutritious breakfast
• Hygiene (shower, brush teeth, etc.)
