Acute Effects of Coffee Consumption
on Health among Ambulatory Adults: @NEJM
This is fun. Few remarks: small sample (type ii error is a concern), a lot of confounders (still remain) in part related to blinding, mediations, and adherences. Great attempt though!
Summary πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
πŸ‘‰ Among 100 healthy adults, consumption of caffeinated coffee didn't result in more daily premature atrial contractions compared to avoidance of caffeine.
(primary outcome per 24 hour period)
πŸ‘‰ Both daily coffee consumption and greater-than-normal coffee consumption were associated with more daily steps taken πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ, fewer minutes of sleep per night 😴, and potentially more daily premature ventricular contractions πŸ’” among persons who consumed >1 coffee drink per day.
πŸ‘‰ Coffee drinkers may have reduced mortality in prospective cohort studies, possibly due selection bias :) (my take)
The healthier you are the more likely you drink coffee!
(probably)
πŸ‘‰ Caffeine is a nonselective adenosine receptor antagonist, which enhances calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum and can result in afterdepolarizations, leading to premature ventricular contractions.
πŸ‘‰ Limitations include a small trial population, lack of blinding, and the trial population being relatively young and healthy.
- Great effort doing this: nutritional epi is hard (if I can classify this under epi)
Only 3 patients consumed 4-5 cups a day!
