Do you experience brain fog, fatigue or bloating?
These might not seem like serious problems. But ignoring them could be potentially fatal.
Here’s how they damage your health and the process I used personally to avoid a fatal outcome.
THREAD
Things like brain fog & fatigue are common symptoms of a condition called leaky gut.
So are:
- diarrhea
- depression
- skin issues
- sugar/carb cravings
- inflammation
- low testosterone
These can be a dangerous sign & should not be ignored.
I experienced this myself.
Leaky gut is linked to many serious health problems.
- IBD
- celiac disease
- diabetes
- several types of cancer
- depression
- multiple sclerosis
- chronic fatigue syndrome
This happens because leaky gut allows dangerous toxins to “leak” from your gut into your bloodstream.
Your gut is protected by a 4-layer wall
The surface layer consists of a single-cell layer called the epithelium
This determines what passes through the wall
Tight junctions play an essential role in the epithelium by forming a connection between epithelial cells
High levels of zonulin, which weakens tight junctions is a key sign of leaky gut
This allows spaces between epithelial cells, allowing toxins to “leak” from your gut into your bloodstream
Research on this is still new
Not long ago most doctors disputed this was even possible
But we have been able to connect some dots on common causes or factors that put you at higher risk such as:
- stress
- dysbiosis
- chronic inflammation
- pathogen overgrowth (i.e. SIBO)
- excessive sugar/alcohol in diet
- processed foods
- certain medications
Again, the research on leaky gut is still in its infancy
So even if these factors aren’t applicable to you, you can still develop leaky gut
And if you’re experiencing the symptoms previously listed, there’s a good chance you may have it
There’s no fool-proof way to detect leaky gut, sometimes it takes several tests
Here are a few metrics/tests that are often used to identify it
- Zonulin levels
- Lactulose-mannitol test
- Antibody testing
- Dysbiosis
- Pathogen overgrowth
When I had leaky gut, zonulin levels were 152, testosterone at 536 & sky high inflammatory markers
Within a few months, zonulin was at 70, testosterone was at 833 & inflammatory markers were normal
These weren't perfect, but significant improvements
Here’s exactly what I did:
1. Eliminate Cause(s)
Leaky gut does not just magically appear
As I mentioned earlier dysbiosis, stress & overgrowth are common causes
You need to identify what that cause is & address it so that you can start healing the lining of the gut
This looks different for everyone
2. Inflammation
High inflammation is almost always associated with leaky gut and can significantly worsen the issue
Sometimes addressing the cause of the leaky gut in the previous step helps get inflammation under control
Other times it takes a most deliberate approach
Here are some useful tools for lowering inflammation
Check the tweet I put out recently on inflammation for helpful tips on getting this under control through both diet and lifestyle
3. Reseal & repopulate
Leaky gut occurs when there's spaces in the lining of your gut wall
In a lot of cases, the balance of the gut microbiome is also off
To truly heal, you need to reseal the gut lining & repopulate the microbiome with the right balance of good bacteria
To reseal and rebalance, I prioritized the following nutrients mainly through food & lifestyle but also with strategic supplementation where needed
- Glutamine
- Glycine
- Butyrate
- Lactoferrin
- Beta-hydroxybutyrate
- Zinc
- B vitamins
- Magnesium
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin K
This process takes time, it’s not something you’re going to resolve in a week
It took me months to fully resolve the underlying issues and heal my leaky gut
But it’s possible
And it’s necessary to avoid more serious and potentially fatal downstream issues with your health
If you have leaky gut or think that you do, @Nickmarsh99 & I can help you with this process
I did it myself & have helped others do it too
