My two cents for #match2024 #IMG candidates with regards to creating program lists for them to apply to. Creating a list of program for you to apply to is essentially program research.
Program research is important especially if you do not have to resources to apply to hundreds of programs. I applied to 67 programs and was able to attain 11 interviews. This is what went onto my program research.
Firstly I would discourage copying already made program list because everyoneโ€™s application is different. But I would say applying to programs that gave a candidate with a similar profile like yours( such as a classmate or alumni of your school) is a wise decision.
Before you begin looking you have to know what to look for. You have to understand what kind of candidate you are ? Are you a Us Img ? Visa requiring non-is Img ? How many years post graduation are you ? Do you have us clinical experience?
After understanding your application Creating a program list should come from in different stages. The first stage should be very broad and should use less strict criteria. My primary tool for this was Residency explorer. I went from individual US states looking for IM programs
Iโ€™m that state that had 1. an IMG rate of >10% 2. Sponsored J1 visa 2. And which My scores did not fall in the lower 25% of candidates that matched in the program. With this I was able to have my first draft of programs. With this initial draft of programs
I did a second stage screening by researching each individual program usually using their official websites looking for their application criteria.
Programs sometimes had cutoffs for Usmle scores, years of graduation, total amount of USCE. This allowed me to filter programs out
But I must say one thing not all programs are strict about criteriaโ€™s they publish on their website so if you think you got a shot, give it a go. While researching programs, going to check list of current residents is a good idea it would show you the kind of candidates that
Eventually match there, a good sign is to see candidates that have a similar background as you such as the region of which your medical school was located. And I considered not seeing a single resident that has a similar profile to yours a poor prognostic factor with regards to
Getting an interview or matching there. With all this I was able to get a list of programs that I was sure would consider my applications. But I would say this if you have the resources definitely apply to more programs. But there is most likely some form of diminishing returns
With regards to interviews gotten Once you start applying to above a 100+ programs.
