1 year ago, they decriminalised weed.
Now it's been called the Amsterdam of Asia.
Here's what happened to me from smoking the jazz lettuce in Thailand for 60 days
(and why I've quit):
Weed is considered safe by millions
And my view was the same.
I started doing the weeds around 14, shortly after finding alcohol
This is what many of us born in the UK call childhood.
For 10 years I've smoked on and off and never saw it as a problem
Until I got to Thailand..
Weed was normalised by the music I grew up on
But I never had a problem with it.
I hadn't smoked in over a year
But already knew I'd be trying some of that Thai legal green.
Smoke what you want, all day errday.
What's not to love?
Well after doing just that my view changed:
The first day in Bangkok I couldn't believe the number of weed shops.
And these aren't some outback shack joints
Some have pool tables, Netflix corners, the works.
It was stoner Disneyland
And cheap.
But without noticing, I quickly fell into the trap..
Rolling into the first one I liked the look of
They offer you everything:
β€’ strains
β€’ pre-rolls
β€’ all sorts of edibles
Some had weed-infused food
And even sold in some 7/11s.
But as weeks went by I found myself forming new bad traits and lifestyles.
Here's my experience:
The travel culture, especially in Thailand, is centred around drinking:
- alcohol only parties
- hostel drinking games
- pub crawls the main event
So I used weed to 'get on a level'
But it was cope for lack of self-confidence.
When smoking for social, I just end up retarded-
And anxious.
When everyone is on alcohol and or stimulants, weed isn't the play
Instead, work on your energy and have good people around.
But I've had great nights smoking with others in the right setting.
Weed is for escaping, not presence.
Here are my main issues with it:
1. Antisocial
Some people get energy from THC
But I (and many) turn the other way.
Soon as the weed hits, my aura is zapped.
THC impacts the CB1 cannabinoid receptors in the brain
Starving neutrons and blocks cells transforming glucose..
The reason we lose 'social energy'.
2. Weak chat
Travelling Thailand sober, some nights I felt anxious
And needed to relax + lower my inhibitions.
I tried different forms and intensities
But as a natural introvert, weed pulls me back towards those innate traits.
When high I'm chilled, but have little to say.
3. Low ambition
On days I smoke, my head empties.
Sometimes it's a good thing
But I became accepting of myself for making little to no progress.
Life becomes a slow drift and you're satisfied with your current state.
This is the opposite of my foundations and g oals in life.
4. Control
When I abused alcohol I loved blacking out
and the losing ability to choose what happened to me.
Weed has the same effect
But in everyday life.
You SHOULD be forging attack
But you're incapable or unwilling.
Hard things become optional, not essential.
5. Sleep
If you've smoked weed late, you probably passed out quick.
But THC heavily disrupts REM.
When your brain finally clears the weed, it tries to claw back REM
This is why we get those fucked up dreams in the early AM.
But your sleep doesn't recover. It's degraded.
6. Dependancy
Smoking weed before bed was a staple for me during uni.
After long shifts, I'd say I need it to wind down
But the problem is as your baselines change, you soon 'can't sleep without it'.
Thailand strains give me fast withdrawal
Unsleepable the following nights.
7. Addiction
I turned 25 two weeks ago and already decided weed wasn't useful for me
Yet at 11am was baked:
- Anxious
- Unsociable
- No zest for the day.
After being in the 'weed's not addictive' cult for years
I caught myself smoking just cos.
That's a subtle addiction.
8. Anxiety
When your brain receives cannabinoids, it can overstimulate your centre of emotions and fear:
The Amygdala.
When smoking (and not) I felt more anxious + emotional
Lead to incompetence in body language.
This forfeits your presence, confidence and you look awkward.
9. Training
The most important aspect of training is intensity.
But when smoking I'm demotivated to take sets close to failure
And inevitably won't create new stimuli to grow.
Think of when that pre-workout hits and you're locked in-
Weed blocked this.
That also goes for:
10. Lack of focus
Last month I fractured my knee.
This was a good opportunity to progress in my business.
But I made little progress.
At first I thought Thailand was too distracting
But only weeks later I realised weed was destroying my ability to enter Deep Work.
Now I don't want to paint weed out as only bad.
It has a time and place
The problem is getting high haphazardly.
To prevent this, answer these:
-Why are you you smoking?
-How will it benefit you?
-Does it hinder your BIGGEST goals right now?
But to form a balanced argument:
Here are some reasons I will smoke again in the future:
1. Introspection and getting new perspectives is powerful.
2. Creativity boost when you're lacking inspiration
3. Gain better perception of the world and forget the BS societal norms
4. Can help relax in high stress
5. Makes you 'feel' moments better. Laughing, great sex, appreciating music
6. Explore yourself spiritually in ways you wouldn't care to sober
7. The brain interprets worry highly when assessing. Weed allows you to see things clearly for what they are.
8. It's nice.
Finally I wanna point out some health implications:
Huberman says weed could be anti-androgenic by:
-increasing prolactin
-increasing aromatisation
And decreasing Testosterone.
It also encourages a sedentary lifestyle and the munchies won't help with diet.
So what can ya do?
Use lower strength THC occasionally.
Time for reflection, channelling energy and 'zoning out' is powerful for mental wellbeing
But 99% can't be disciplined.
When you do smoke, make sure your strain isn't going to fry you
And your high is purposeful.
But the better option:
CBD.
This is everywhere now so I'm sure you know how it works:
Reap health benefits that come with marijuana without the psychoactive part.
Somewhere between a 6:1 to 10:1 CBD ratio is ideal
But quality CBD is harder to find.
If you don't need it, you don't need to use it.
This is all formed off my own experience with smoking weed in Thailand
But 60 days of use saw most aspects of my life gradually decline.
As a young, ambitious man, weed fits none of my lifestyle priorities
And for now I've quit.
But on the right occasion, I will smoke again.
And if you're dealing with addiction of any sort, I've been through it.
Meditation, mental health and living healthy have had by far the biggest impact on my escape from them.
You must be patient to work through it
And appreciate you are enough without the substance.
Now I'm sober from alcohol and weed after 10 years
I'm experimenting with other drugs like psychedelics and MDMA.
