A POWERFUL DIGESTIVE HEALING TOOL
EVEN FOR IBS AND IBDs!
MASTIC GUM: HOW IT PROTECTS THE GUT!
THREAD
Mastic has been heralded for its jaw-dropping gut healing properties for millenia
Even Galen, over 2000 years ago, recognized its medicinal value and supported its use for alleviating nausea, diarrhea, and other GI ailments
It was worth going to war over
We’ve discussed previously how serotonin, driven by bacterial overgrowth, drives most gut problems
Thankfully, mastic is one of the easiest and safest antibacterials out there
It has been a HUGE player in my own recovery from debilitating GI issues.
Additionally, it possesses antifungal (against candida!)
and even antiparasitic properties, making it an intriguing remedy for various bugs.
I think anyone with gut problems can benefit from trying mastic gum, and I’ll elaborate further on why.
H. Pylori, a common bacterial GI infection responsible for ulcers, gastritis, and even stomach cancer, can actually be treated with mastic gum.
You read that right.
Studies have shown its efficacy in eradicating this stubborn pathogen, showcasing its incredible potential.
Mastic gum also boosts saliva production, which is an antimicrobial factor, preventing bacteria from lingering in the mouth and the gut.
So many people are chugging water, not realizing they have dry mouth from poor saliva production, setting them up for problems down the line!
In clinical trials, a mastic has showed promise in treating gastroparesis, a condition characterized by slowed GI motility.
Reductions were seen in nausea, bloating, and fullness feeling, increase in appetite!
Proper digestion relies on efficient motility to prevent bacterial accumulation.
GI disorders, even diarrhea, involve drastically slowed gut motility.
They also involve higher fecal loads, i.e more poop built up from improper bowel movements.
The slowed motility, leading to constipation and reverse peristalsis has been recognized as a problem of upper GI issues like heartburn and nausea for a century.
Mastic gum's antimicrobial and pro-motility properties can help the gut function properly.
It’s common to “tongue scrape” when waking up with a white tongue and bad breath. This is due to microbial overgrowth!
Reverse peristalsis, the movement of food / bacteria up the GI tract, also contributes
Mastic helps these problems in multiple ways, at the root cause.
A white or coated tongue often indicates overgrowth in the GI tract + dysmotility.
However, chewing mastic gum can help clear this white coating, offering relief from these persistent issues.
Likely due to its pro-motility and antimicrobial effects.
Shockingly, conditions like Crohn's disease and other inflammatory bowel conditions have shown reductions in inflammation AND reduced symptoms in response to mastic gum use.
I mean, this is just incredible!
The endotoxin (LPS) of bacteria can stimulate various inflammatory pathways implicated in GI disease, such as nitric oxide synthesis and prostaglandins.
Mastic, in addition to its anti-endotoxin properties, has been shown to have direct inhibitory effects on these pathways!
Excess polyunsaturated fats from seed oils can drive inflammation, in part through this mechanism.
This is especially true in the gut, where these inflammatory mediators play huge roles in GI disease.
Mastic has the unique ability of halting this pathway.
Excess nitric oxide, which mastic gum helps protect against, is also a huge player in inflammatory bowel disease you can read more about NO here:

There’s no dosage or formula to success with mastic. I just chew it as I like, which is often.
You can also re-chew the pieces multiple times, so one tin lasts around a month or more, even if you’re constantly chewing it.
