Attachment styles come from our first relationships we have at birth through adolescence. They shape how we view ourselves, other people, and our ability to emotionally regulate (or feel safe within relationships.)
SECURE ATTACHMENT: a feeling of belonging and trust in relationships.
Traits of secure attachments:
-ability to recover after stressful emotions
-ability to have empathy for other people
-trust and openness
-overall peaceful feelings in relationships

ANXIOUS ATTACHMENT: an overall chronic fear of abandonment.
Traits of anxious attachments:
-chronic clinginess
-struggles with being apart/taking space
-constantly analyzing their behavior or your own behavior
-always on edge on relationships

AVOIDANT ATTACHMENT: very distant and withdrawn in relationships.

DISORGANIZED ATTACHMENT: erratic or unpredictable behavior within relationships.

-highs and lows (little stability or in between)

Things to know about attachment styles:
1. Most of us have blended styles: it's common and normal to see yourself in multiple styles.
1. Most of us have blended styles: it's common and normal to see yourself in multiple styles.
2. Our attachment styles can shift in different relationships: we might be more avoidant in romantic relationships and more anxious in friendships. Different people bring up different patterns.
3. We can all work towards more secure attachment: through reparenting, self care, and conscious awareness we can develop more secure patterns in our relationships. They're not set or fixed.
4. The most common attachment pairing is anxious attachment with avoidant attachment: aka "the chase." Be aware of this pattern if it shows up in your own relationships.
