Productivity can’t keep pace with technology.
🧵 The Productivity Paradox:
1. The Slack Dilemma
While Slack’s chat app is impressive, constant pings contribute to distraction.
The fragmentation of team communication makes us worse at work (not better).
2. Lazy decisions
Short, frequent messages encourage hasty and incomplete conversations.
This results in imprecise writing (and thinking), which impacts decision-making.
3. Retooling our work
The most effective way to bring about meaningful change is through tools.
Rather than solely relying on best practices, tools are drivers of change in behavior and processes.
4. Product = Process
In the design ecosystem, tools like Figma have transformed “how design happens.”
Figma, Github, and Salesforce show how the product shapes the process.
5. Specialization
More teams require specialized tools to address their unique challenges.
Too many team members are forced to fit square pegs (data requests) into round holes (tickets).
6. New norms
The right tools can establish new norms for how teams operate within organizations.
Only then can new standards of productivity be achieved.
