🧵 How to identify your ideal customer profile:
Step 1: Brainstorm
• Get specific w/ potential attributes.
• Eg: company size, job titles, pain points, technologies used, budget, & location
• Pinpointing the right attributes will take time.
Step 2: Observe Early Adopters
• Reach out to excited potential users and get feedback.
• Pay attention to who gets most excited about your product.
• Focus on the customer segment that most values your offer.
Step 3: Experiment With Initial Persona
• Take your best guess at a set of unique attributes of your ICP.
• Keep it super narrow, almost comically so.
• It's better to start too narrow vs. too broad.
Step 4: Test and Refine
• Create some profiles based on your initial attributes.
• Reach out to potential users and start pitching.
• See which persona converts best.
Step 5: Expand Gradually
• Once you nail your narrow personas, slowly expand into adjacent segments.
• Make sure you have sufficient resources before expanding wider.
Step 6: Evolve
• Revisit your ICP as your product and market evolve.
• Certain attributes may become more or less important over time.
• Resist expanding too quickly before you have PmF with a narrow ICP.
tl;dr
1. Brainstorm Potential Attributes
2. Observe Your Early Adopters
3. Create Initial Persona
4. Test and Refine
5. Expand Gradually
6. Evolve
