A History of Ozempic
Ive been asked about Ozempic (and Wegovy) constantly the past year
They are argued about on the timeline almost daily, ofte with histrionics
I believe in knowing the history of a drug gives you better understanding of it, so lets get educated
1. History of Fat Loss Peptides
Ozempic and Wegovy are the brand name version of a fat loss peptide called Semaglutide.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1
That stands for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists
GLP-1 is actually a NATURALLY occurring hormone in the human body that is secreted the small intestine (hormones are just chains of amino acids strung together)
GLP-1 was discovered back in the 1980s, when scientists were researching how insulin was released, and it was learned the the stomach releases hormones
These are called incretin hormones
What does GLP-1 Do?
It helps regulate insulin, blood sugar, fullness, and appetite
-Increases fullness and satiety
-Slows gastric emptying
-Regulates blood sugar levels ny stimulates the release of insulin when blood sugar levels are high,|
-Can increase fat burning
GLP-1 signaling is impaired in people with metabolic syndrome
This is partially why insulin resistance and blood sugar get out of control, and why people overeat
The premise of GLP-1 is acting on this system to restore appetite, insulin secretion, and metabolism to a healthier state
2. first generation GLP-1
2005: Exenatide becomes the first GLP-1 receptor agonist approved for treating type 2 diabetes
Fun fact, this was developed from Gila Monster venom. |
it stimulates insulin release, but doesnt have the strong appetite suppressing effects that semaglutide has
3. 2nd generation, Liraglutide
GLP-1s looked promising, more research is done
Liraglutide is developed by attaching a fatty acid molecule to the GLP-1-(7-37) molecule, enabling it to bind to albumin and have a longer half-life
This modification increases its half-life from 1.5-2 minutes (for native GLP-1) to 13 hours
its approved in 2010 by the FDA
4. 3rd Generation, Semaglutide
In 2012 Semaglutide is developed by Jesper Lau and a team of researchers at Novo Nordisk in Denmark
Its created as a modification of liraglutide to make it longer-acting for once-weekly dosing
It spends 5 years in human trials
It hits the bodybuilding scene as a research chemical, and becomes famous for how powerful the appetite suppressant effects are.
5. Ozempic and Wegovy
To be clear, they are the EXACT same drug
Ozempic got approved in 2017 after multiple human trials,
Wegovy got approved in 2021
Ozempic's maximum weekly dose is 2 mg
Wegovy's maximum weekly dose is 2.4 mg, slightly higher than Ozempic
6. Better than Ozempic, Tirzepatide
this is the 4th generation drug now,
it is a dual agonist that activates both the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor and the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor
Its the preferred cutting edge drug, and more effective than ozempic
7. What about the Side Effects?
The most common side effect is the nausea that is experienced within the first few days of dosing
This is where medicine is failing people hard, because the appetite suppressing effects are not well explained
Ideally patients would eat low calories upon initial usage, and then over the course of a week the sickness diminishes as the body acclimates
This is also why Tirzepatide is preferential, the dose does not get titrated up like semaglutide (which has more side effects at higher doses
8. The peptides do not make up for poor diet and lifestyle
This is where the muscle loss effect comes into play and where mainstream care is also failing big time
People go on the drugs, they dont know anything about macros
they dont eat clean
they dont get enough protein
they dont exercise
they become malnourished
They lose weight, but they become skinny fat in the process
-Fat loss peptides work best with OBESE patients who are supervised and making the necessary lifestyle changes at the same time.
9. What about the really BAD side effects?
Dont read this thread and think Im a drug rep, these peptides can screw you up if used irresponsibly
most of the common side effects are attributable to bad practices with diet and initial dosing and application
(nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation)
the worse ones, like pancreatitis, or stomach paralysis, YEP, that could happen
By all means, file the lawsuits
This is why I dont think these drugs should be used casually by anyone
For morbidly OBESE individuals, carboholics, life long food addicts, people with 40% bodyfat, diabetic 2, nothing else has worked
They are worth trying and could be part of the solution that rewires your brain
For everyone else thinking they'll just take ozempic/wegovy to lose 20lbs for their snatched summer body,
NOT RECOMMENDED.
