NAMING OF POIKILOCYTES
Metaphors involve mapping source (SD) and target domains (TD).
The SD is the conceptual domain from which we draw metaphorical expressions (e.g., a teardrop)
The TD is the conceptual domain that we try to understand (e.g., a teardrop poikilocyte)

The conceptual power of a metaphor relies on an awareness/knowledge of the SD, and this changes over time.
When we look at poikilocyte names from the early 1900s we see examples of source domains that are no longer part of our lexicon.
A nice example is the anvil!

Maybe a time will come when an unfamiliarity with modern-day SDs deprives some of our current poikilocyte labels of any metaphorical tension!
