“Height is genetic”
That is what you’ve been taught to believe, but it is not completely right.
Here is what you should be doing to maximize the height of your children (It starts far before you have kids).
Medical professionals tell parents that the height of their child is predetermined by the height of the parents.
While genetics play a large factor, they are not everything and there are things that can be done to ensure a child reaches their height potential.
Height is not everything, but it is most certainly something that is desired in society; athletics, dating, and more.
Here is what I would recommend:
Pre-conception, during Pregnancy, and during childhood.
Each of these stages are extremely important when it comes to maximizing height of a child.
What I am about to talk about spans across all three.
While I will touch on other strategies as well, one thing is clear.
Nutrition is vital.
Nutrient-dense diets full of amazing foods will allow your body to grow, simple as that.
So what are some of those foods?
There has been a lot of discourse recently about eating meat as it relates to height.
I dove deep into it. What did I find?
Red meat is an absolute cornerstone of generational height, and it is clear why.
I gathered data and estimates on a large sample of countries, looking at two main data sets.
Historical meat consumption of a people & height of that group of people.
What did I find? An incredibly strong correlation. The correlation is not perfect but the trend is undeniable.
This makes complete sense.
Red meat is incredibly high in protein with an amazing profile. Without protein and, more specifically, the right protein, it will be incredibly hard for your body to get the nutrients it needs to expend energy on growth.
Red meat is also extremely high in iron, which is essential for growth. Iron deficiency is one of the main causes of stunted growth.
Zinc is crucial for cellular growth and development. Red meat is an awesome source, second only to zinc, in my mind.
Take Japan as an amazing example.
Historically short, Japan started increasing red meat consumption over the last few decades, post World War II.
What happened?
The average Japanese height began to skyrocket.
People think that height is genetic. But those genetics can change in very few generations.
Make sure that you are eating meat often, including the good collagenous ligaments and tendons.
Your future children will thank you.
Once they are born, make sure they do the same.
Calcium
Calcium is critical for bone development.
This includes growth plates.
I would maximize calcium intake, during pregnancy and childhood.
Check out the importance of dairy in this chart I constructed.
The results are simple. Countries that consume more dairy are taller
The Sun
All important.
Vitamin D facilitates the body’s absorption of Calcium. If you and the child do not get enough sun, you will not be able to absorb enough nutrients to grow a healthy child inside you or for the child to grow once they are born.
On top of that, vitamin D is essential for the growth of cells.
Without it, growth is nearly impossible.
The best source of vitamin D is the sun. Period.
Yet it is demonized.
I recommend embracing the sun.
Spend as much time outside in the mornings and evenings as possible and build up to mid-day exposure safely.
In 2006, 41.6% of people were vitamin D deficient. I believe it has only gotten significantly worse since then.
We need sun to function and grow optimally. I recommend sun pre-conception, during pregnancy, and for a child (safely) while they are young and beyond.
Lack of sun could rob them of height and will certainly lead to many other dangerous health conditions.
Exercise
Children must exercise to achieve their growth potential.
Physical activity is a stimulator of growth hormone.
Growth hormone is essential for bone density, muscle growth, and overall development of tissues and organs. All of these things lead to maximizing height.
While the literature has yet to produce randomized control trials for a topic like this (it is all but impossible), my personal belief is clear:
A sedentary child will simply not reach the height of their active counterpart.
Breastfeeding
I have previously spoken a lot about breastfeeding for proper facial development and breathing, but what about height?
Breastfeeding is the best way possible to ensure that a baby is getting every necessary nutrient.
It is proven to make them taller.
I recommend breastfeeding exclusively for the first 6 months and then continuing to breastfeed while mixing in real, nutritious foods, unlike the soft or liquid baby slop that is recommended by “experts”.
Sleep
For a child, sleep is absolutely essential.
The strongest release of growth hormone from the pituitary gland takes place during sleep so, without amazing sleep, maximum height will not be realized.
For great sleep, I recommend:
-Dialing in circadian rhythm (get morning, some midday, and evening sun. Use no electronics at night. Circadian-friendly lighting)
-Sleep in a cool, dark room
-Not eating right before bed
-Potentially purchasing a grounding mat for even better sleep
ADHD Meds
ADHD meds like Adderall are stimulants.
Research has come out saying that long-term usage of stimulants like ADHD meds are potentially harmful to overall height and could stunt growth.
Avoid them. Take away the iPad and teach focus instead.
Posture
Not much research has come out due to its modern nature, but poor spinal posture is becoming more apparent.
Being on a phone or computer too much can lead to a curved spine.
I believe this lack of alignment will not allow the body to grow to its maximum height.
Overall, it is quite clear that far more can be done to maximize height besides just genetics.
-Eat meat (and more)
-Embrace the sun
-Breastfeed
-Maximize sleep
-Exercise
-Avoid stimulants
-Posture
If you and your children follow this list, their height will be maximized
