MIKE TYSON NECK TRAINING
Do you have a pencil neck?
Want to be harder to knock out?
This is the ultimate neck training guide.
With a whopping 20 inch neck development, Tyson has arguably one of the most impressive neck developments in Combat Sports history.
But what if I told you the way he trained his neck is actually quite a terrible strategy for overall neck development?
Here's why...
A staple to Mike's neck training was wrestling neck bridges. He actually attributes this to the crippling neck pain he suffers with today...
Why isn't this the best solution?
You're only loading cervical (neck) EXTENSION.
There's so much more our neck is responsible for...
THE BETTER WAY TO TRAIN THE NECK
1. Neck Extensions:
Neck Harness & an Incline Bench allows even complete beginners to safely load the neck.
There's far less compressive load through the spine, minimising potential cervical nerve irritation.
If you find the execution with plates awkward, you can even set-up a cable machine & neck harness.
The benefits of this is that you get an equal length tension relationships through the entire range of motion.
2. Lateral Neck Flexion
The muscle fibres of our neck run at a diagonal orientation, therefore not only do they work to flex & extend the head forward, but also helps rotation & side bending to occur:
3. Isometric Neck Strength:
To resist having your posture broken in clinches, wrestling & grappling exchanges, the ability to keep your neck in a neutral position is also critical.
This can be achieved using a Swisse Ball as shown below:
BENEFITS
- Reduced concussion risk
- Ability to absorb harder blows
- Aesthetic Appearance
- Strength Transfer (Yes a stronger neck = stronger nervous system force outputs)
All tie into effective neck training.
4. STRETCH & STRENGTH MODEL
You can not only build yoked traps, but also get an insane neck stretch simultaneously with a kettlebell shrug.
